***Intel i7 4790K Owners thread***

ddr4 comes with skylake tho? I think it will be interesting

True, but it looks like they will still only be 4 cores 8 threads. Targeting low power with improved graphics. I bought an AMD APU for a chip with built in graphics, and it's great, but don't want IGPU on high end CPU tbh, just wasting space that could be used for more CPU imho :D

Think the mainstream stuff will be more of the same, want to make the move to X99, just depends between 5820K / 5960X pricing, and how much I can get for kidney..

I may after a few months when x99 has been established a bit better. Haven't had the 4790k that long, and tbh iv been a bit underwhelmed by haswell and indeed the previous Ivybridge chips due to the thermal issues.

Yeah I get you. Been pleased with my 4790K but the other 4770K's I had weren't great for temps.

I think I would be happy with a 5820K / 5960X @ 4.0Ghz, some nice DDR4, and decent Gigabyte Mobo. Z97 is pretty good but was more something to mess with until X99 arrives. I plan on keeping my X99 setup for a few years. By then the mainstream will probably be on 6/8 cores for much less, AMD might even have a 20 core CPU that can't keep up by that point :p

Theyre not a bad chip per se, it's just that they could have been so much better if soldered. I unfortunately believed the hype that they would run cooler than previous haswell chips. The two ive used were worse than my old 4770k. Im currently running at stock, and it's doing pretty ok for games with sli 780's though.

That's a good point I hadn't even considered, 5820K will be soldered, so despite having more cores might not run that hot.

Got a feeling once we get reviews X99 is gonna make a fair few people switch over. Only two days to go.

The one problem by leaving Z97 platform, it means Broadwell next year won't be viable until Q4 Broadwell -E, but then if Broadwell only adds says 5% IPC improvements and still not soldered, 5820K will likely still have the edge in performance over the 4 core Broadwell chips..

This is the thing what's bugging me, my heart would love a 5820K but my brain is saying that it's not worth it.
I looked at some performance figures...

2600k 3.40ghz = 8,585
4790k 4.00ghz = 11,301
5820k 3.30ghz = 12,988

if we standardise these figures to 4.00ghz, we get...

2600k = 10,100
4790k = 11,301
5820k = 15,743

...and divide that by cores...

2600k = 2525
4790k = 2825 + 11.9% over 2600k
5820k = 2624 + 3.9% over 2600k

...there's virtually nothing in it, my upgrade itch is going to have to stay for a while. :(

So wait, the 3.3>3.6 Ghz 5820K beating the 4.0>4.4Ghz 4790K has put you off?

:eek::eek::confused:

Run that 5820K overclocked and it creams the 4790K. Isn't this website called Overclockers? Just checking !?

4790K installed, temps seem in line with 4770K but have gained extra speed due to default clock speed at similar temps.

Think that's me set until later next year for CPU / Mobo, when we finally see what AMD Have cooking up.

Can't see the point personally, unless you're just interested in benchmarking. There's no point stress testing unless you're running a realistic bios setup that you'll be using 24/7.

The main advantage of these newer CPUs is the power saving; let's face it they're not much faster than the previous generation (or two). Running with manual full load vcore all the time for the vast majority of users/tasks makes no sense.

Agreed, it's ok to do that if you're just doing a bench run. If for a 24/7 over-clock I want power saving features on. Like to be as power efficient as possible, no point running max volts and clocks at desktop.

Any overclocking yet Boom?

Might have a go later on not had time yet, for 24/7 I'll run this @ stock like I did with my 4770K, so the extra default clock speed is a nice jump for me.

If it does 4.4/4.6 Ghz for bench runs I'll be happy :)

Please stay an addict :D

I can then buy your 4790 when you upgrade....;)

Ha, yeah I'm not going Skylake that's a definite but if the i7 5775C turns out to overclock well and lower temps my 4790K might end up on MM. Latest bios for my mobo supports Broadwell, these chips must be coming soon.. I am going to try and resist though. Honestly 4770K / 4790K are probably enough for next 5 years :p But yeah my upgrade addiction :o

What sort of volts for 4.6 Boom?

Tbh, ill probably keep the one in sig for a bit longer. Was considering skylake but might not bother.

1.36v CPU, 1.2 VRing.

Yeah I'm skipping Skylake as well. I don't want to change mobo / memory this year. Might consider i7 5775C though, just need to see temps and how well it overclocks.

Nice temps Boom!

I'm beginning to wonder if the 4770k I had before had caused the H100i surface to be no longer flat due to the IHS being damaged.

Possible?

Cheers, temps are still high during stress test, but for real usage gaming / encoding there in the 60C's.

Your IHS got damaged? I've got a bunch of AIO coolers and still fine after couple years use. Not sure what would cause that tbh.

I had a 4770k before the 4790k which had a damaged IHS with a poor attempt at delidding. I'm wondering if the H100i surface could now be damaged too!

While the temps are high 70c at 4.7ghz running 1.1vCore @ +0.02 offset, its not crashed and seems fine.

I would have thought a 4770K with high 70c's @ 4.7Ghz is really good? If you can run that stable count your blessings :D

I only OC for benching, use @ stock for 24/7 use.

Sorry, maybe I'm not explaining myself! :(

I bought a 4770k for £100 off the MM and at stock it was hitting 100c. On closer inspection, the IHS was damaged and in no way flat - so the contact to the H100i was awful!

My reason for wondering if the temp on my 4790k are higher than they should be is due to the damage the 4770k "could" have done to the contact plate on the H100i!

Sorry, does that make more sense?

Yeah, so which one does 4.7Ghz in the 70C's?

If that's the latest chip that your currently running I imagine your cooler is fine. Haswell just runs hot, 70C's @ 4.7Ghz is decent for an AIO tbh.

Silly question as your all going to say YES! :D

But would this give me any advantages in games over a 3570k @ 4.5Ghz?

Also considering the 5820k.

Should I just wait, as CPU is more than adequate for at least another year of top quality gaming?

If your using a small form factor then 4790K is a nice chip. Otherwise 5820K is much better bet, the extra cores / threads. DDR4 support, soldered chip etc well worth the small extra cost. 5820K at stock is fast over-clocked it's a monster.

Settled on 4.7 with +0.1 offset (1.1 base volts) and 1:1 uncore. Can probably get the offset down a little.

These chips do run rather warm. My FX8320 I'd keep below 50 at 4.5Ghz, whilst Haswell gladly goes up to 80+, even with my Fractal S36.

Finding Realbench to be very good, so thanks for that.

Yeah Haswell is def hot, keeping it cool in Mini-ITX is a challenge. The performance is there though.

You sticking with your 4790K through Skylake?
