all it would take for Nv to use the open standard is write a driver - but they wont as they want to sell a licence for their own proprietary tech
Great to see that Intel, maker of the most numerous and best selling GPU technology (IGPU's) are choosing to adopt an open standard.
Stupid, Stupid, Stupid, NVidia.
Why did you have to be so bleeding closed minded when you came up with G-Sync. If only they had of made it useable by anyone, then we wouldn't be in this stupid situation.
Yet again the inferior technology is going to win out, it is like HD DVD vs Blu-Ray or Betamax vs VHS all over again.
If NVidia would have let everybody use G-Sync then the monitor manufacturers would have eventually swallowed the cost of the module and everybody would be able to use the technically superior adaptive refresh rate technology. But as it is G-Sync's closed-ness forced AMD to look for alternatives, which of course they found a similar effect could be done with the EDP system which they persuaded VESA to morph into Adaptive-Sync. Which is great and all that but I'm sure we will all agree that from a technical standpoint the Adaptive-Sync isn't as capable as G-Sync yet. Of course it will get there and in a good few years once it is the only variable refresh rate tech available it will be better than what G-Sync is capable of now.
On the other point, yes I do believe that the Maxwell video output capability isn't compatible with Adaptive-Sync, sort of like the way, AMD's GCN 1.2 architecture isn't capable of HDMI2.0. It is something that NVidia will fix in Pascal I expect, unless it is too late in the design/production of Pascal to include it, just as AMD will have HDMI 2.0 support in a future GPU.
...Was it not derived from V blank technology used on laptops?...

I'd use that term 'best selling' loosely. I bought a 5930k for the CPU. Had the 5930k had integrated graphics I would have still bought it, but that would have counted as a sale.
Why do people think that everything is as simple as writing a driver? Hardware must still exist. Not that I think the 9XX series doesn't have the hardware capable in order to use Adaptive Sync for the intended purpose.
Given how massively they outsell AMD & nVidia they're still the most popular by a long way even if you subtract one iGPU for every dGPU sold, which of course doesn't make sense either as that'd leave all the iGPU-less CPUs with no dance partner!
So the tl;dr of this is open standards ftw, buy freesync and we'll just have to wait for nvidia to cave on the whole g sync thing
Nice sidestep from my question. So you can't admit that AMD will not charge for it if someone wants to use the Freesync name. For your information, Adaptive sync was developed by AMD who got VESA to include it in DP1.2a. So your objection to whatever it's called is pointless. Free publicity for a free technology, big deal.
And before you say Nvidia developed it first, may I ask why they didn't submit the idea to VESA?
I'll take the tech that doesn't only work with one connection type please. Also that's some pretty revisionist history right there![]()
But please feel free to put words in my mouth or maybe you want to accuse me of being a 16 year old using my fathers computer as well.![]()
Did you actually read my post as I meant it? What I was saying was I do not wish that when Nvidia release the new products next gen, they are still stuck with only compatable with Gsync monitor; I wish to be able to have a adaptive-sync monitor, and free to go either camp when upgrading graphic card in the future (not talking about current existing Nvidia cards). The only thing that's getting in the way of that happening is Nvidia saying no and refuse to provide support for it as well.Just buy a Fury X and a Freesync monitor then? I am just telling you how it is and how it was. I am more than happy with my monitor, so unless AMD have something that has the 'Wow' factor, I will stick with Nvidia for my main system. Nvidia might well be introducing something in Pascal to support Adaptive Sync monitors for all any of us know but the current Nvidia cards don't have the ability to support A-Sync monitors.
Good news that Intel are getting on board but I would be surprised if any Intel gamers would be interested.

It has been said that there is no technical reason for both Adaptive-Sync and GSync not to be able to work with the HDMI connector and spec.
Please enlighten me as to what part of history I have rewritten, other than the HD DVD being superior to Blu Ray as that has already been pointed out.
If I have something wrong I am happy to admit it.
Free-Sync
What a revisionist load of old tosh.![]()
OP should change the thread title to say Adaptive Sync rather than Freesync IMHO. The implication of anything AMD brings out the trolls.
Shh... we don't use that word around here. you wanna get stabbed bruv?

FreeNSync
If it was AMD who was first to market Adaptive Sync tech, my 970 would be running NSync right now on any ASync panel!!!
However, everyone should remember that Nvidia created ASync for PC Gamers, they deserve full credit and should be applauded!
