WWCFTech has collected a few rumors based on AIDA64 release notes and HKEPC, about Intel’s CPU launches for the upcoming year. There are some ambiguities, however. First off, WCCFTech believes (although with the level of confidence of a “?” in their table) that these SKUs will be created using some 14nm fabrication process, although the Chinese source calls it Cannonlake, which implies 10nm (unless Intel repurposed the code name). The big news, if true, would be that Intel is planning on elevating their top-end mainstream processor to eight cores (sixteen threads).

The original rumor, from HKEPC, doesn’t make any speculations about L3 cache size, although WCCFTech seems confident that it will be 16MB. This is a 33% bump over the i7-8700k, inline with the 33% bump in core count (which doesn’t need to go hand-in-hand, but they believe will in this case).

If you’re hearing this just after purchasing an 8700k, don’t worry too much. HKEPC believes that these processors will launch in the second half of 2018, so you probably still have another nine or ten months with Intel’s best mainstream SKU.

Very nice indeed, although we don't know if it is just going to be coffeelake with 2 extra cores or icelake cores. There were rumours suggesting that we won't be getting cannonlake for desktop, only mobile chips.

Yeah we do. Just look into your heart. :D

Is that still considered a rumour? Even Wikipedia lists Icelake as the desktop successor to Coffee Lake...

Well i definitely have no reason to stay with HEDT really, so I'll be going from a 5820k to Ice lake 8 core at least. Will just have to put up with the paste.. I'll wait and see if the IPC increase is worth it for me first.

Sounds like a tasty upgrade though :)

Looks like we're a bit off from Ice Lake then.. Anyone else think that 8 core on mainstream might be the sticking point for a while, like quad core was?

I suspect not if AMDs infinity fabric lets them make a relatively cheap 12 core CPU.

Intel are just playing catch-up with AMD at the moment and given it’s pretty simple for AMD to tack on more cores I suspect they’ll push that hard.

Very insightful. I not an AMD fanboy (haven’t had an AMD CPU since S939 days) but it’s pretty clear they’re being disruptive currently:

- they pushed Intel into breaking their 4c/8t monotony early
- AMD have more cores on the mainstream platform and currently their top 1800X is almost £100 cheaper than Intel’s 6 core 8700K
- they forced Intel to rush to bring this CPU in so soon after coffee lake which is only just becoming readily available
- AMD are innovating - their modular CPU design is performing well and beating Intel with their monolithic core strategy on price, it forced them to pull in high end Xeon CPUs into to HEDT line just to compete
- they’re making Intel look miserly in the HEDT platform by offering PCI-E raid without a paywall
- AMD don’t require a new motherboard with every single minor CPU revision
- AMD aren’t using cheap TIM meaning you need to delid to get decent overclocks (however they don’t overclock great)

Intel clearly have an IPC lead but they’re looking stagnant and playing catch up.

Interesting potential... Unless they're still defiantly using crap TIM, in which case it's gonna bake :/

Yeah it's really annoying that Intel are doing this.

I can see why, as what might be viewed as only a matter of pence saving on each CPU adds up when they're selling vast units.

However I think there's a market for some sort of "super" version with soldered IHS. I'd certainly have paid more money for that. Instead I'm going to need to mess about delidding....I can't even put more than 1.25vcore before temps are ridiculous.

I think the last Intel CPU that was soldered was 6850k etc...

Anyway I normally jump ship when Intel release a new cpu but I can't see the need for 8 cores for gaming....

X399 + Threadripper continues to destroy anything Intel have within £200-300 more so unless Intel want to play nice & reduce prices to consumer friendly levels AMD will just continue to pickup a lot of business.
