Intel price drop 21/22 July

What sort of drop are we talking about here and will it be for all intel cpus? I'm thinking of getting a mid range system imminently using an intel core 2 duo cpu around the 2 Ghz mark, is it really worth waiting a few days?

I would be happy to pay ~ 200 for a q9550 :D

How long is this likely to take as money is burning a hole in my pocket and likely to need spending by mid august :)

Don't know how much the price cuts are going to be and if it's going to be all Intel chips. But I do think it is worth waiting a few days to see what happens.

I'm in the middle of buying parts for my next upgrade, already ordered my mobo and ram. I want to buy a Q9450 or Q9550 waiting to see how much they will drop before I decide which to get.

q9550 is dropping to what the q9450 is now if that is any help?

I've seen this around lately ...

remember to use google to convert the USD value into GBP then multi by 1.175 for vat and that's a realistic value :)

edit; as greebo said above it seems most are just reducing to the price of the next model down, ie. Q9550 = Q9450 now, E8400 = E8300 now etc.

Well covered here with the new prices for 1000 units:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11718668&postcount=1

Just use whatever current uk price is for a current model to work out what the new price will be.

For example, q9550 should drop to current q9450 price of £206 inc vat

q9450 will drop to good knows what since they are end of line but clearly they will still have to be dearer than a q9400 so maybe only £10-20 less.

q9400 will come in at current q9300 price of £176 inc VAT

Only a tenner to come off q6600 prices but it all helps.

Best other news is the e8500 dropping to e8400 price of £115

So q6600 will still be the bargain quad to buy since the cheapest q9xx chips will still be £176 so maybe a £70 premium.

The E8500 is a steal at £115 though for gamers.

EDIT: Dam, too slow again and beaten to it! But as Mitch said, ignore the actually 1000 unit prices and don't try and convert, just look at the next mdeol down uk price to give you a very accurate idea of the new price. These price cuts have been touted for ages but nobody knew when in q3 they were going to apply (until now hopefully)

Mainly gaming I suppose .. only other stuff I really do is watch films/converting them for my mp4 player which it seems the wolfdales do better anyway.

Is the E8500 likely to clock higher than the E8400 also?

The extra multi helps so you don't need to run your memory and fsb as high.

The E8400 has a 9x multi and the e8500 has a 9.5x multi.

For 4Ghz the e8400 needs 9 x 444Mhz and the e8500 needs 9.5 x 421Mhz.

So both should be acheivable on decent mobos and memory. It's when you want to go higher that the problems arise.

For 4.5Ghz an e8400 needs to run at 9 x 500Mhz which a lot of mobos can't do plus your memory is running at a minimum of 1000Mhz as well.

Whereas an e8500 only needs 9.5 x 473Mhz which more mobos do.

So if you are only planning on 4Ghz, the old advice was save your money and get the e8400. However, with the price drops and the e8400 been end of line and probably only £10 less you might as well get the e8500 for the extra tenner. It was a hard choice to justify when the price difference was £30-£50.

Love this thread :)

Was just about to buy a 8400 looks like I'm gonna hold off, half way through the build anyway and it wont be complete for another couple of weeks :D

Well I'll be using an MSI P35 Diamond mobo Greebo .. and some DDR3 memory for it, atm thinking 1333mhz stuff. Could this be enough with a thermalright ultra 120 extreme to hit those high clocks with an e85?

thanks :)

If the Q9550 weighs in (with a new price) at just over £200, that is really good news, I was thinking the new price would be in around £235-£240.....
