Intel v AMD

I have also been a die hard amd fan but have recently upgraded by phennom system to an intel i5.

Its a shame as i was only really wanting to upgrade my cpu and gpu but cant find a decent AMD chip which touches the SB or IB i5

Loyalty to a company has nothing to do with this it is simply a matter of getting the most for the money being paid and right now for the average person that is generally speaking Intel. For HTPC builds AMD is better for the most part due to the Llano chips which are great for what they do but since most people here want gaming rigs then the Intel i5 is the way to go.

just wanted to pick up on Stoner81's point here, I've used both AMD and Intel in the past and current. My HTPC uses an AMD Llano A3870K Apu with a passive hd6670 gpu crossfired, I run this setup now as my MAIN rig and play the odd game on it as well as blu-ray and surfing. I'm currently playing MW3, granted it's not DX11 but with everything on Ultra and at 1920x1080 I return a very healthy 90+ FPS, Skyrim I return 50+FPS @1080p High, not bad for a CHEAP setup which cost less than £300 :D

I think this is basically what humbug is trying to say really that is totally depends on what the user wants the system for. People ask me about upgrades or building systems and my first question is always "what are you going to use the machine for" because I can then suit to what they need it to do. There is no point building a i7 machine for somebody who surfs and checks email :p

In complete gaming terms I think AMD are getting bitch slapped all over the place but lower down they have some awesome chips (Llano), most people here want gaming rigs with all the bells and whistles turned on (AA etc) and for that Intel is the way to go.

If I was building a HTPC then I would without hesitation pick a Llano chip since it would only be for watching movies etc so no point in having a high spec system that is what my main desktop is for.

My system has all the bells and whistles turned on and its an AMD gaming system
Yea? Run MSI Afterburner to look at the GPU usage, and see how far is your SLI GTX580 usage away from 100% in games that use 4 cores or less.

50% GPU usage on both cards would mean you wasted your money getting an extra GTX580 to SLI.

I was helped out with this on here a while back, around 80-90% usage on both GPUs at stock 3.6ghz but overclocked at 4.4 ghz no issues.

50% is a bit of a wild exaggeration. Over clocking works wonders though, hence the purchase of an unlocked processor.

If i'm still losing 5 or so FPS ill just leave it as a first world problem and forget about it.

50% is very possible, if you actually were playing games that are actually CPU demanding and the game uses 3 cores or less.

Games like Starcraft 2, Skyrim, WOW, Total War series, mmorpgs will all see your SLI GTX580 hugely bottlenecked.

I think the point of what some people here trying to make is not so much about how Intel is gaving AMD a smash down on gaming performance, but more about doing the sane thing going for the proven faster gaming platform/CPU for simliar amount of money...

Must say I'm confused by your stance MNA24, especially when we showed you how your 8 core CPU was bottlenecking your GPU's at stock, when an Intel quad core wouldn't.

I'm aware of the bottleneck at stock and that an over clock removed this in the games that I personally play, so it no longer remained an issue for me. When looking at actual figures yes there may be extra performance with an intel chip but at the moment with the performance my AMD gaming system is capable of, any extra performance will go unnoticed which touches on the point humbug made in that "it does what I want it to do".
