Hi can someone tell me if the Intel Xeon Processor 5130 is any good and what socket it is.

Will it be ok on an Elitegroup RS400-A mobo? or will i have to upgrade? maybe spec me one or tell me what i should be looking out for?

oh and how much it it worth cos my brother might sell me one for 20quid(:

Thanks!

Hi there,

the 5130 is basically a 2.0GHz server version of the Core 2 Duo (65nm) and uses the LGA771 socket.

Unfortunately it will not work with that motherboard as it uses the LGA775 socket and does not support Core 2 Duo architecture chips.

@cmndr_andi
hi thanks for you quick reply, whats the difference between a server version and a normal one? oh and is it better than an Intel Pentium 4 650 because thats the one i have right now..

The main difference between the 5130 and a standard core 2 Duo is that the Xeon is made to a higher grade (for use in server applications) and use the LGA 771 socket. At the same clockspeed the 5130 will be just as fast as a core 2 duo.

The 5130 is much faster than a P4 650 due to it being a true dual core and it uses a newer architecture that is much faster clock-for-clock. However, you will not be able to drop in a Xeon 5130 into a LGA775 board like the RS400-A since the CPU uses a completely different and incompatible socket (LGA 771).

May I ask what RAM type you are running on your current board, as it seems that the ECS board can take either DDR or DDR2?

As for a motherboard to run the 5130, you would have to look for LGA 771 server boards, and these still aren't cheap- even though they came out years ago. May I ask what board your brother is using?

Do to the cost and relative low performance of the 5130 CPU (compared to modern CPUs), I would suggest going for an AMD Athlon II X2/X3/X4 CPU, an AM3 board (or you could go for an AM2+ board if you want to reuse your existing DDR2 memory) and some cheap DDR3 memory.

umm i have 2gb of ddr2 do ocuk do lga771? cos i cant find any :(

i dunno what my brothers using il, ask him if i see him later today.

whats the 5130 roughly equal to like in terms of performance compared to the AMD ones?

thanks

ok so i can get my hands on a Intel S5000XAL Server Board from somewhere which i cannot name because of forum rules! but it says:

Graphics Controller ATI ES1000
Video Memory DDR SDRAM

So does that mean that i can only put some ancient agp ddr1 relic in because i have a ati 5770 that i really want to try out :l

Yea, you won't find any LGA 771 boards on OCUK (or most retailers) as they became obsolete about 3 years ago. You can find some on auction sites, but these will be second-hand (no warranty) and still rather expensive. Also, you will most likely need new (and expensive) ECC (server grade) RAM to make it work. I wouldn't suggest going down this road as is rather expensive and you won't get great performance.

On the other hand - there is AMD Athlon II cpus. For an AMD board that will allow you to reuse your DDR2 RAM (and also supports DDR3) and costs £44 this is a good choice (though it is currently out of stock on OCUK).

As for the CPU, this page shows how the £48 Athlon II X2 255 compares to a core 2 duo 65nm with 4MB L2 cache (just lthe xeon 5130, excpet with a slightly higher clockspeed). This page shows how it compares to a £60 Athlon II X3.

If your budget is much lower than this - then I would recommend buying a popular second-hand core 2 duo like the E6600 and buy a cheap second hand motherboard that supports it or buy a new one like this. However, a G41 board like the one above won't overclock too well (and these core 2 duo CPU really can overclock very well) and if you spend similar money on a second hand boar - you could get something using a P35 or P45 chipset that will overclock a Core 2 CPU very nicely.

ahh maaan so xeon is definitely a nono? even if it can run 2 CPUs at the same time and use ddr2 ram?

i get what you guys mean but i wana be like 10000% sure lol

Yea, its a nono - the dual CPU boards are expensive and require ECC RAM (so you couldn't use your existing DDR2 RAM from your P4 system - you would need to buy new stuff). Also two 2GHz dual core Xeon CPUs would still be a fair chunk slower than a Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU - and you can buy these for ~£70 second-hand and they work in most standard LGA 775 boards (and work with standard DDR2 RAM).

You would be much better off investing in new kit. May I ask what your maximum budget is and I can give you an idea of what you can get?

ok il take your word for it

i dont really have a set budget to be honest probably about £110

i have ddr2 memory btw

thanks!
