Intel Xeon servers.. opnions?

I guess you'll probably get a better response if you ask some more questions that you want answering.

It's like saying... "Petrol cars... opinions?" ;)

They are ok, a bit crunchy but rather tasty with some ketchup.

That the kind info you wanted? ;)

I find they don't make as much of an impact when dropped from a 20 story building as a regular computer case.

That's a very broad question indeed, can you be more specific?

Intel Xeon based servers have been arround since 1998 and are used in millions of deployments worldwide, so yes, there are excellent in short and have direct competition with the AMD Opteron brand.

OK, I'll bite.
They are great.
We only buy Intel based servers here at work - even when we need cheap & cheerful we only go the Intel route.
So we highly rate them.

LOL sorry i was'nt a bit more specific but its good to see there an industry standard. I might specify a model if your lucky. BRB :P

WHAT?!?!?!?! and LOL

It depends who you talk to eh?

A lot and I mean a lot of virtualisation customers go with AMD over Intel.
Certain workloads are much better suited to AMDs architecture - I for one will stick with AMD for our production farms - Intel goes where we dont care as much about the server, bless.

Edit: Do your kit "servers" have dual psu's and hot swap disks? If not, they are not servers IMO. Just an observation.

Tower Chassis, 1X Quad Core X3330 2.4Ghz 1066FSB, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz, 3x 500GB HDD's Supporting Raid 0,1,5,10, DVD-RW

Server Intel Xeon Quad Core X3440
Tower Chassis, 1X Quad Core X3440 2.4Ghz 1066FSB, 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz, 3x 500GB HDD's Supporting Raid 0,1,5,10, DVD-RW

whats the consensus on these 2?

What do they need to do?

BOOO
Rack > Tower imo towers are basically just home pc's
(But I'm an amatuer so I'm probably sprouting rubbish like normal)

I have a Xeon server for my web design/host busines at the moment and it works perfectly, it's never crashed and I use windows(see, amatuer)! Around 9 months of up time and still running strong.

What is it you want to run?
Websites? Gameservers? A Big Database? Backups?

it would really be for a medium to large sized office network, a database containing lead information stuff like that in other words im talking about your average sales office/call centre set up here guys. in that sort of environment how do u think these would perform?

How long is a piece of string?

Get an expert in.

Or if this a school project, be honest with us. Say it's a school project and decide how many staff you company has, and we'll give you a better answer.

It's worse, he is the expert ;)

The chap runs an IT consultancy type business and actually sells these.
