Interested in getting a bike, help?

Get a four stroke, two strokes won't last long, plus you have to feed it costly two stroke oil which costs more than a tank of petrol

Obviously I'd have to look into further details etc about the bikes but this evening I've found a handful I don't mind the look of; Aprillia RS, Yamaha YZF, Honda CB125R, Hyosung gt125 and Derby GPR 125.

Yeah kind of want to avoid the whole chav on a scooter thing. In terms of the whole restriction thing what happens if I do derestrict it? Will my insurance be void etc and would I actually get in any real trouble or is it one of those things that gets a blind eye?

You won't be insured or licensed i.e you might as well just not bother with all the hassle and go and buy one and ride it now.

Fine, get done for no insurance and probably get banned.

If it's de-restricted it will make well over the legal limits of a CBT and if you're inspected by the police and they don't believe the bike is restricted you'll be in for a fine or whatever the punishments are.

From what I have read, the RS125 is costly to maintain and as wazza300 pointed out the two strokes don't last and drink oil.

They seem to mostly be ridden by kids whose parents have been talked into buying them one because they wanted a 125 that looked like a big bike this includes things like the yzr as well.
Fine if someone else is paying to have it rebuilt, personally if I'm paying for it I want a bomb proof 4 stroke.
Not as pretty or quite as nippy, but will go on forever as long as you get it the bare bones of maintenance every now and again.

Bit harsh above, better the question is asked now rather than when it's too late.

I rode around on a Yamaha YZF-R125 for 6 months avoiding motorways. The bike was great but I'd recommend doing a DAS up to A2 and getting a bigger bike. It'll cost you around £500 to get the license but opens you up to a much more enjoyable riding experience (you'll probably do it within a year anyway).

Honestly I know you're saying I'll want to do it so far down line etc etc but I'm having hard enough time persuading family/girlfriend I can be trusted on a 125 hahah let alone something bigger. It's more for their peace of mind that I ride on a smaller bike and get some experience as tbh I don't know if I would want my first bike to be so big either.

The bigger bikes with proper tyres are much more stable than a 125 and have the grunt to get you out of trouble if needed.
I got knocked off my 125 and have never had any problems on the 650, people can now see and hear me.

My 125 is loud, whilst filtering people can hear me when I rev her.

KTM PowerParts full system exhaust without dB killer. Its loud, but not annoying like some other exhausts. Its loud enough to hear me coming. :D

I'm 6ft1 and was looking at the RS125. But a sports 125 is no fun, get a naked or Supermoto for your 125.

I was looking at...

Yamaha WR!25X
KTM Duke 125
Yamaha MT125
Some others Supermotos, but I can't remember now.

On CBT you can't go on motorways, the course is really easy. It costed me £110 and that's it. Next day I did my CBT I did 150 miles with my mates, who also has a duke 125. But the seat is not too comfortable for long rides, 50min and you start to feel a little discomofort which gets worse. I just usually stand on the pegs for a bit or take a break somwhere.

That bike is so nice. How much did it set you back? Might take a look at some supermotos or nakeds.

Thank you! :D
Taken those pics today after I cleaned and waxed her. I didn't want a sport bike, as I would look comically on one due to my height...

Well for a duke like this you're looking at £2200+, I paid just a tiny bit above 2k. It was a pretty good deal as I have KTM PowerParts bits on and KTM FSH.

WTF is with this forum... Double Post..

First time ive been in the bikers cafe and didn't realise there was another thread about it all. Everyone is just helping me out a bit here, give us a break.

I never actually thought about height here. At 6 3' maybe I should get one like yours.

Honda reckon my CBF will do 125mpg... I still doubt that although even 100mpg is damn good when out of my 3 cars none of them average above 25mpg :D

It'll do more :)

That wasn't directed at you :D. This forum has been weird recently in that it won't post your post, then you try again and it posts twice.

If you're happy going for something like a CBF, then it'll be WAY cheaper than any car. You'll easily get 100MPG, even riding full throttle and insurance is minimal. However, at 6'3 you might look a bit big on it. Have a look and see if you like the Honda Varadero, they're nice & big.

The varadero is great, I did loads of miles on mine, 200 miles a week commuting. 80mpg and 75-80 top speed. £1500 upwards will get you a decent one.
