Internet Cafe Software

You have, or will have, an Internet cafe and the machines will all run Linux?

And you want software to manage them?

I don't know anything specific, but using Linux you are able to remotely connect to various machines without the need to install any expensive software. [free software in fact!]

You might also want to take a look at some server editions of Linux, again free, and have a read around.
 
I am not sure Linux would make good software to install on the customer machines in a Internet Cafe :eek:
 
Problem 1 - Most people are used to windows
Solution - Use a Windows like window manager

Problem 2 - Not many games
Solution - Not a problem unless you want games or try WINE

This site has some information about 'NoCat' which is multiplatform, perhapse this could be of help as the question is related to mac not linux its about the only thing there which might help.

I am thinking of technical reasons, I would expect a lot of Internet Cafe customers are going to be tourists. They and many other people will want to do things like plug in cameras or usb sticks etc... they will be formatted in Fat32 or NTFS.

Not too mention you will probably have to explain to all these people how to setup their MSN/AIM/ICQ/Yahoo etc... in 3rd party open source apps. Then there is the complete opposite. Someone who knows what they are doing with Linux comes in and does some nasty business you cant figure out...

Depends what you are planning to offer I guess. If its purely web browsing then its fine.

This is not a problem what so ever

Have you ever used Pidgin or Kopete? You type in your User ID and password and they work just like the MSN client. There's no problem.

Then there is the complete opposite. Someone who knows what they are doing with Linux comes in and does some nasty business you cant figure out...

Linux is designed to be a multi user network operating system. If Macs are 'the choice' for Media / graphic design, then Linux is 'the 'choice' for administering and running an internet cafe. IMO.

You realise you cant actually write to a NTFS partition in Linux yea?

That's not 100% true. You can write to NTFS, and progress is being made daily on this very thing. NTFS-3G.

There is however no problem reading data from NTFS, of course.

I have never found a memory stick formatted NTFS, are these common? Do most cameras support writing to NTFS formatted memory sticks?

IME it's usually FAT32. All the removebable hard drives and USB sticks I have used have been formatted FAT32 out of the factory.
 
might be worth restricting what they customers could do though, like if you start allowing them to attatch devices into the computers is could release something harmful and infectious and possibly take down the entire network, i used to work at a net cafe myself where the system would allocate the time that the customer had paid for and then cut them of leave them at login, was good software but bit buggy in the fact it kept loosing clients on the network, IMO the importance in working in such a field would be security
