Hello, hopefully someone can help as I am having problems with my Internet. My ISP is Nildram and I am on 2mb. Every 5 minutes I keep getting disconnected. Sometimes it's okay for an hour or so and then it keeps disconnecting, almost random. I have telephoned Nildram and they keep carrying out these tests and then referring me to BT, saying nothing is wrong on their behalf. The problems I am experiencing have never happened before and I was running the same setup as I am now.

I have tested a lot of things including running a direct cable to the master socket, changed the filters, tried another ADSL modem (currently using a Thompson Speedtouch 330 modem), tried a different PC and still the problem continues.

Also ran anti-virus and spyware software and everything is fine. Ran the modem diagnostic tool and everything is fine except for when it reaches the 'Internet' test symbol and says there is a problem with it.

If anyone needs to know anything else about my setup etc then please ask, thank you.

Have you checked your internet settings because it might be as simple as your connection is set to disconnect if left idle for 10minutes?

SNR Margin, attenuation and current sync rate would be useful - instructions in FAQ.

As requested:

-------------------------------
ProductName= SpeedTouch 330
ProductRelease= 0x0400
SerialNumber= CP0443AT8DB
SoftwareRelease= 301.0.0.12
VendorName= THOMSON
-------------------------------
ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 50
ReceiveMargin_dB= 5
RxOutputPower_dBm= 0
SendAttenuation_dB= 31
SendMargin_dB= 27
-------------------------------

Just to add, i previously had a 1MB Internet connection with Nildram, did not have any problems. When i upgraded to 2MB, that is when all the problems occured.

Any more information required, just let me know.

That is one of the first settings i checked. I can assure you 100% that my Internet connection is not set to disconnect after the default 20 minutes of inactivity.

Youre signal to noise ratio is low at 5db (ReceiveMargin_dB= 5)
can you try connecting using the BT master socket and then posting the stats?

In order to connect the modem to the filter, then the filter to the master socket, i need to power up the modem using a USB. I don't have a laptop, and my PC is in my other room. Therefore, at the moment, it will be difficult for me to power up the modem where the master socket currently is located. I also do not have access to a router. Any ideas or suggestions?

Try and get a router from somewhere.
Without making sure your wiring isn't part of the problem, there's not much more you can do.

Have you got a long enough cable to go straight from the master socket to the usb modem? Would help rule out if its an extension thats causing a problem, also look into removing the ring wire, that has been known to pick up a lot of noise and cause problems.

What does that mean, ring wire?!

OK, I managed to borrow a router from a friend. Problem fixed. My stats are as follows:

ReceiveAttenuation_dB= 50
ReceiveMargin_dB= 21
RxOutputPower_dBm= 0
SendAttenuation_dB= 31
SendMargin_dB= 28

Could anyone guestimate with regards to what connection speeds I would get with BE Unlimited? Based on my line stats, what is good and bad about them? I read somewhere, the higher the SNR Margin, the more my line can be taken to the limits thus, resulting in higher download speeds, can anyone confirm this?

With a 50dB downstream attenuation you won't see much of an improvement with ADSL2+ vs Max ADSL, but with either you would do a lot better than your current 2Mb.

Most likely you will be in the 3-4Mb range, possibly a little higher.

Might be worth checking to see if interleaving is enabled on your line, if its not then get it enabled.

Dunno if that would help though as your SNR ratio is quite low.

*Hijack.

Is this ok? Ive had no end of problems for the last week, culminating in no bradband at all last night, just home from work and its back on, still slow tho.

Looks fine.

The 9dB SN Margin might suggest your target has been raised as a result of earlier instability so that will be limiting your downstream sync a little.

Odds are you have a reduced BRAS profile which will go up if you hold the current sync for 3 days so you may not see an immediate improvement in data rate.

You can check the profile by testing here : speedtester.bt.com

Seems to have stabled out today, just under 4mb speed, and its remained connected all day, for a change.

In my error logs in administrative tools i get a tcpip warning, saying that:- "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts." What does this mean?

Hmm, but would that knacker up my broadband, as usually after i get it I get disconnected and only a reboot lets me re-connect to hub.

read this somewhere: "Sounds more like error 4226 to me, which limits the amount of outgoing connections in XP service pack 2 to 10, when that is reached (which often happens with torrents and similar) the machine blocks the connection for several minutes.

There's a patch to increase the limit to 50, just good error 4226 bit torrent patch, or look in your system error log to see if there's an error which is locking the internet."

was for a different problem to mine, but I have the same error I think.
