Sign up to Steam and download a large, free game and see how your connection compares. Obviously it won't check your upload. It usually maxes out my connection at 113 MB/s. I'm on Virgin 1Gig but I don't have the Hub 5 so can only max out the 1000 Mb LAN connection from the Hub.

Depends on your ISP. Some have their own version of a speed checker, which tests the connection from their servers directly to your house.
That is your best option to find your true speed, as anything outside that route will be at the mercy of others' servers.

I guess if I connect my PC or Laptop directly to the ONT, that will eliminate any possible Router issues as well. Obviously this will be a short test considering exposure to the internet.

Any speed test site can be overloaded at times, or any part of the route to it (which can vary) can have similar limitations when you're doing a test. For example even with FTTP you are also sharing capacity with potentially quite a few neighbours (up to 32 on a single 2.5Gbps/1.25Gbps if on GPON) so that can have a big impact.

As already mentioned, there is no best site that's always accurate. Just try several sites whenever doing a test and ignore the obviously slow or impossibly fast.

Are you merely doing this out of curiosity, or is there a reason you're testing it? I.e. troubleshooting slow download speed on a laptop connected through your WiFi (seems to be the usual question/complaint posted on these forums these days).

There's lots of variables that can influence your bandwidth, so it really depends what you're trying to achieve.

Testing on PC via ethernet cable. Checking to see if I am getting what I am paying for.

OP is on FTTP, you either get the speed assigned or you don't get a link. My question was more related to why the OP feels he needs to check his speed, ie, are downloads slow, streaming isn't working etc.

I'm on FTTP and was getting a link, but not at the speed advertised (around 200 instead of 900). Since that just took a reseating of the fibre in the cab, which I watched them do, I wondered if this was the same fault.
