Interesting GTX 295 review

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTYwOCwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

Good impartial review this, especially real world tests. Not exactly wiping the floor with the 4870 X2's are they?
I'm glad I made the jump to the big red ship and with the deal I got for my Palit (£350), it overclocks like a dream, has better cooling, etc. Much better bang for your buck!
See what you nVidia fanboys make of this? :p

Happy gaming!

been saying since the previews, if you really look at where the 295 is faster, its basically, in games you already get 100fps + on the 4870x2 anyway, Deadspace, errm, I forget the others that showed a large boost with the 295. In terms of extra resolutions, I don't think theres more than 1 game where you can use a higher AA level, or a higher resolution, so it really provides you with an identical gaming experience, a better benching card and an extra 50fps in 2-3 games that you can't remotely feel.

Pointless card before the price drop, worthless card now.

Its a GOOD card, theres no doubting that, its just not £450+ good, its just, at £330 it would offer the same value and same gaming experience as the 4870x2, paying more for the same performance is just, stupid frankly.

Buying either cards for over £300 with replacements due in 2-3 months and not much, if anything, that will be out before then in terms of new harder to run games its a fairly silly time to upgrade your gfx. get a lower power, or lower cost card in 3 months, simple.

Agree with most the review, altho there doesnt seem to be many nvidia 'optimized' games that where testing. (dead space for example)

I've been stewing over these 2 for nearly a week now, and it just seems less and less likely the GTX295 is worth bothering with, the 4870x2 dows everything you would need nearly or just as well as the 295 for £100 less. No brainer it seems !

The Apples to Apples page is where you want to be looking in all honesty as it compares the cards in like to like conditions instead of what they perform their max at.

This shows the X2 winning 2 out of the 3 tests....the X2 certainly has been a very good release from ATi indeed! :)

The apples to apples comparisons are too limited to really show which of any of the setups would "win". TBH they need to redo their tests as well as it would be unlikely to see the 295GTX dropping to 0 for such a big period when the 260 SLI didn't as the setups are for the most part identical.

Surely it's an unfair test, single card vs crossfire pair (albeit on one board). How does it look in ordinary, non-ati-funded (ie non-crossfire) games.
Or does the 4870X2 work properly now (IE, without the game devels having to code specifically for it). If it does, I may replace my 280 with one.

At equal prices I would go with the GTX295, but I'm delighted with 4870X2, and wouldn't pay a big premium for the privelage of arguably very minor performance improvements on average, and a better CP. £30 is about the most I would pay on top.

Works very well; in fact, it has worked well since release. No problems with mine; noticeable faster than a 280 in FC2 and Crysis Warhead.

Playing COD W@W last night at 4x AA (edge detect, so x12 Equiv MSAA - see link below which explains) 1680x1050 everthing maxed out, never dropping below 60 fps averaging 90 odd. I LOVE this freakin' card!

Pfft i laugh at your puny X2 settings :p
My GTX 295 running COD:WAW = 2560x1600 + 16XAF + 8xAA + Vsync - never drops below the Vsync capped 60FPS.

And seriously... WHY did you get a X2 for 1680x1050 res?! This thread seems like an attempt to make you feel better with your X2 purchase now it's no longer the fastest card. And linking to a review that shows lower 295 performance gains over X2 than many others.

I had a X2 for about 2 months but sent it back because of appalling drivers, crashes, and hit and miss performance in games. I did get the X2 on release though, it should have improved atleast a bit by now...

Ohh for the love of... Where is my giant rolling eye smiley..

Anyway, I'm glad that now NV have got one you realise the potential of dual GPU cards. ;)

You seem to think i hated dual GPU cards Layte, i didn't :p But i had bad experiences with the 9800GX2 and 4870X2 though.

With GX2 it just didn't have enough memory and bandwidth for the high res monitors it was otherwise suited for, and at the time with SLI you couldn't have dual monitors enabled.

With X2, it was because of problems above. Anyway i'll shut up about X2 now, think i moaned enough about that card already on these forums! :D

1x GTX 260 = 1x 4870 so I'm not sure why people were expecting GTX295 to be hugely faster, all they've done is stick 2 SLI'd 260's on a single PCB for those with older Intel chipsets.

Two separate GTX280's in SLI is probably still the ultimate but motherboard support is few and far between.

Does that review actualy tell you anything other than both NVida's and ATI's cards mash pretty much all games as they are so high performing? There isnt anything between them really, with 4 out of the 6 tests unable to separate them.

It would have been nice to have their single gpu cards there for comparison as well.

If you read the review mate they tested the cards at that resolution [my first post] (2650x1600) and there was NO difference in the apples to apples tests, you nVidia fanboys have more money than sense! You probably paid £150 more than I did for a video card! Also the image quality CF AA vs Q SS AA that nVidia use is FAR superior! [Proved in link below] I have a 22" monitor at the moment but I know it will fly at higher res when I upgrade! Catalyst 8.12 are superb, the 9.1's should be even better!

re

Nvidia all the way for me :-) it dont matter how many fps you get..if the game stutters and it dont feel as smooth then there is no point....i can afford 10 ati radeon 4870x2's but from what i have heard they aint worth owning..sorry to offend but its my opinion :)

on Cod Waw i max everything out to full, i mean everything vsync, antialiasing, the lot,i also go into nvidia control panel and turn loads of other stuff on like supersampling etc,i still get 60fps at 1920*1080...im happy with spec

i am tempted to try 2x4870x2 in crossfire...but from what i have heard from the performance of one 4870x2 i have my doubts...i dont care about nvidia or ati...i just want the best :-)

I reckon some of the stutter is OS/driver related, not saying for sure, but with Windows 7 and ATI preview driver, games are so much smoother.
Oh would I buy a 295 over a x2 not a chance way overpriced for what it is.

At least unlike many here you realise that it is just your opinion, it is massively wrong but then we know what they say about opinions. ;)
