Interview for new job - what should i say for 'why i'm leaving role?'

That's really bad form, especially if that was an in-person interview and you'd got suited up and traveled to their location only to be fobbed off, I'd be tempted to tell them to forget it tbh.

I guess maybe understandable if the interview was scheduled for 9am and the interviewer has just called in sick or has some family emergency or something. Otherwise, this is the sort of thing they ought to drop everything else for else they're not taking hiring seriously. Doesn't matter if they've forgotten or if there's some critical production issue or whatever, there should be other employees available and the interviewer should drop everything and go meet the prospective candidate.
I guess we are waiting for the OP to update us, but you are right Dowie. It doesn't look good from an outsider's perspective of the company. Fingers crossed it can be resolved and @ninjabib gets his interview.

Hi all,

It was remote/online so no costs incurred thankfully. There was a good reason it could not go ahead. I will wait for the reschedule.

Rumours of laying staff off at my current role now. I can't win haha. Still if they lay me off when they are rumoured to happen at least i will be only on a monthly rolling contract in London so will just head back home.

That's a pretty terrible idea. Shows a lack of forethought and planning, an issue entirely of your own making.
Not only that but "this place is much closer" makes it sound like an 'any port in a storm' scenario whereby the primary appeal of this other job is the location. That wouldn't fill me with confidence as an interviewer about their motivations, I mean what happens if another job comes up that's even closer to their home?

In my exit interviews I was always honest about issues I had with the role or place of employment. I left a team of people that I respected and called friends in one role due to toxic leadership so owed it to them to flag it with HR. Another place I was totally missold on hybrid working arrangements and strange management practices from my boss so let them know about those things too.

These are (supposed) to be confidential meetings to help the business you are leaving so whilst there are ways of doing it I would always try to be honest.

EDIT Nevermind, not sure why I thought this was about the exit interview.

"There are some redundancies in the pipeline due to a lack of securing <insert customer type here> going forward so I decided to be proactive and explore other opportunities. Additionally I've found myself being more closely aligned to the coaching aspect rather than the teaching aspect so this role feels ideal to support my growth".

I've just moved from Further Education to the private sector and this was my response in the interview. It's not true - in fact it was the opposite - we had too many students/apprentices for the amount of staff - I was doing two people's jobs across three different roles and putting in crazy extra hours just to keep my head above water. I also actually prefer teaching but for nearly 50% extra salary, I'll put up with coaching.

So the format is provide a situation of why you need to leave that's out of your control and finish with how the new role is better for your career goals anyway.

The new job won't be in London.

Im nota good liar. I will just say they made changes and put me in a totally different job to the one I applied for and I've done my best to make it work etc.

Which is the truth
I think this is perfect. To the point. Professional. True. And will have the desired impact. You might find that they just don't really mind and are in fact used to it if they've done similar before.

Yeh just be honest without sounding really negative about the job switch in your current role, keep it brief, don't ramble. Good luck with the rescheduled interview.

Secret is never to be negative because they know you'll say the same about them eventually.

Keep the misleading job as a brief neutral explanation and focus on exactly why this role is what you want.
