I am going for an interview next week for an IT Technician job.

On the interview invite letter they have mentioned I will under go a short in tray test.

I am not sure what to expect... any tips?

Cheers

They will test you to see if you can put the right thing into a cd tray.

Thh I have never heard of a test named that

"The in-tray test is a designed to assess managerial abilities. Candidates are asked to assess and prioritize data under pressure and consequently make rationalized decisions within a set time frame. The in-tray exercise is very often administered during the Group Exercise at the assessment centre."

Don't know if that's specific to them or a general term though.

in-tray or e-tray exercises are more common nowdays.

Basically they will simulate an office environment (imagine having outlook open on your screen) and you will be receiving a number of emails in relatively fast succession. The goal is to use the information in the emails in conjunction with other info they will give you beforehand (or will already exist in your outlook) in order to answer multiple-choice questions under each incoming email (e.g. Which response is the best one: a, b,c or d).

You will have to do that for a number of questions/emails within a given time period (e.g. 30mins). After that they sometimes have a second part where you are required to write a small report (think small essay, about 2 pages) where you will make a proposal or expand upon a bigger question, using the info you've got from the 1st part of the e-tray and your own creativity/imagination (it will usually be an open-ended question where you will need to propose/suggest something to your "manager").

search for e-tray and in-tray exercises on the internet, I believe there are a couple of tests you can try out.
