Interview; Suit or No Suit?

Always a suit, you need to dress to impress and show you mean business. Why give someone an advantage over yourself from the outset just because you aren't dressed properly?

It amazes me that people actually need to ask these questions.

Surely it depends on the job? I've read from several places that if you've applied for a job in games development it's best not to wear a suit because the workplace is usually very informal. You would just look out of place in a suit.

But of course, it's probably best to go with a suit unless the job happens to be a game development position.

All the job interviews I have attended wearing a suit have resulted in a FAIL.
All the job interviews I've gone in jeans and t-shirt I have got.

All retail jobs though.

Suits make me feel uncomfortable and just don't feel like myself while being interviewed resulting in me not coming across properly.

However if you can wear a suit do it.

I think I was wearing swimming shorts and sandals for my last interview. Phone interviews for the win. :D

I did the phone interview that got me my placement in Vienna in my boxer shorts, in my defence it was at 9 in the morning

On topic, you have to make the effort, if its an insanely hot day, take a jacket with you but dont wear it until you go in

I just don't understand how wearing a suit is a good skill.

Why am I so at odds with this world.

I would always wear a suit to an interview.

I used to think that suits just didn't suit me as well - but you just need to get one that fits properly. I have to get slim fitting suits otherwise I just look and feel uncomfortable.

Get yourself a good fitting suit and you'll feel a whole lot better about it!

That being said, if you think the type of job doesn't require you to wear a suit for the interview, then a smart shirt and tie shouldn't cause any problems.

Think I might go have a look, see what I look good in.

Suit

As div0 said, finding the right suit takes some time, i took a whole afternoon suit shopping, ended up with a really nice slim fitted burton suit, and got the job!

Obviously if your applying for a part-time position at mcdonalds then a shirt+tie would suffice

Suit. It demonstrates that you're willing to put some effort in, in my opinion. It just smacks of a 'can't be bothered' attitude if you turn up to an interview not looking smart.

Couple of tips.

Wear colourful shirts and ties, colour usually means uve got a good character. Etc.

Make sure ** shoes are spotless, wear a pair of trainers till you get there. One thing i was told when i went for a job interview with foxtons. The person interviewing you will assess how your dressed.

Suit everytime. Neutral colours, & no joke ties. Clean shoes!! May seem obvious but you would be amazed how many don't bother.

Research the company, show genuine interest in the role, be attentive & you are half way there.

Get the basics right & you will be infront of most.

Good luck :)

I work for a huge software development company, even though the workplace is very informal (tshirts/shorts/sandles etc.. :p) it is still worth going to the interview in a suit. Most people start off smart and then after a few days go back to informal clothes. Your better to over dress than under dress.

Yeah but I hear in the games industry is even more informal. A while ago I read a BBC article that had a quote from someone that said it's best not to wear a suit to the interview. Not that the BBC is a particularly reliable source for that sort of information, but I've never read anything that says otherwise.

Yeah could be. I guess it depends on the studio and who is interviewing you (either HR or a techy)
