Interviews, new suit and tan!?

I like the idea of plain black suit, black tie, black shoes, white shirt. Very plain and simple yet clean and formal. I guess it just suits me but thats what I'll be doing for my interviews.

I guess the occassional change of shirt colour can be nice. But I like that formal plain look.

Are you an undertaker?

Black suits are nice, but not with white shirts in a work or interview setting. Wear a light blue shirt or something.

Better still get a charcoal grey suit. It will serve you better.

I totally agree with this. When I'm interviewing I'm not trying to find out if they're a fasion guru, but I do expect them to be smartly dressed and the points made above are what I look for when interviewing.

Oh, when you're in the interview, eye contact is extrememly important and whatever you do, if you're asked what your biggest flaw is, don't say that you're a workaholic (or words to that effect).

Sorry to go slightly OT but what is the expected answer to the biggest flaw question? That question always sets my mind riddling as to what I should say without it counting too badly.

Someone said to me that you should claim that your biggest flaw is that you are a perfectionist as its both positive and negative but have never tried this to date.

My response from Huddy's interview guide:

Q. What are some of your shortcomings?

A. You can't just say 'nothing', it's arrogant and requires no thought. You need to mention at least one thing, but put a positive spin on it e.g. "Once I've started something I just have to see it through to the end". This makes it sound like you see it as a negative point about yourself but the interviewer is more likely to see it as a positive. But, for goodness sake don't say "I'm a bit of a perfectionist" - it's about as lame as you can get!

There isn't an expected answer, the answer should be honest and therefore most likely unique to that person. The bog standard 'I'm a workaholic/perfectionist/whatever' answer shows me that the candidate isn't putting any thought into the interview. Knowing that an interview is the time you need to sell yourself, that really puts me off a candidate.

I've had a few people give me that answer and on two occasions that has been the response that made me not give them a job offer.

Ughh I am in a Client facing role and went to a small taylor in Ipswich who makes very good suits for my build. Was around £300 and has served me very well for a while. It's a plain charcoal suit with a good cut. I have always worn Cufflinks to an interview, though plain silver ones nothing too flashy. And a reasonably plain silk tie is damn good advice.

In terms of the interview question on strengths and weaknesses I have always been trained that you look at everyones strenghts and put a potential Weakness with them i.e. Confident = Possibly arrogant, Diligent = might not be a team player. So any time I am asked about a weakness in an iterview I use an overblown strength. If I have already said that I am a confident person not afraid to try anything etc, then I might say as a weakness that sometimes I have found that being overconfident can be intimidating for some, but as I am now aware of that I wait for my results to speak for me in a job.

Not my best answer but then I am not preparing for an interview at the moment thankfully!

So, I'm heading off for job interviews in the coming months. I'm finishing my 4th year at university and applying for graduate positions with BP, Shell, BNFL and others and I've got my first interview next thursday.

What jobs are you going for? Engineering?

And on top of all this, one of my workmates assures me a few sessions in a tanning salon would make me look a lot healthier.

After watching Final Destination 3 yesturday I wouldn't :(

jking

For a suit I would go for a black one, imo pinstripes look tacky.

tan lol. if being pasty is your problem make sure to wear a white for the day.. also a few sessions at the gym should get get the blood circulating round your face to look a bit more healthily as well as looking generally fitter.

failing that if youre not one for exercise theres always your mum/sister's blusher.
