Just a heads up if anyone's interested EDX have teamed up with The Linux Foundation and are offering one of there courses for free.
Starts: 3rd Quarter 2014

"The Linux class will be free and available to anyone with a Web connection. The foundation normally charges US$2,500 for the course, which is already taught online and in person through authorized training partners."

Looking forward to this course very much.

It is the first time I have done any sort of course in 10 years, well since Uni really.

I just need to get Ubuntu installed now and I am all set (if that is what they are using of course?).

Online classes?

I hope, because I am still getting used to using and gradually getting my head around using Linux, Ubuntu and all the other Linux based distributions.

I am currently using Ubuntu 14.04 64bit (LTS version).

I hope I can also get some sort of qualifiaction (with additional added on costs; mainly having to pay myself for them, hopefully it will be worth while from doing it to achieve a certificate in using Linux based distributions and operating systems).

I dived in head first. 6th May I started a job where Linux / Ubuntu 14.04 was my main OS. I've picked a fair bit up but would love to not have to google every problem I encounter.

If anyone's interested Jupiter Broadcasting have started a Linux show called How To Linux which will have tips for beginners, think its going to be weekly.

i've registered on the site but not for the course. I'm a bit confused

I can access the course for free via "auditing" a course?

What if I decide I want to get a varified certificate after? Is that possible or do i have the pay the $250 upfront?

EDIT:

Asked EdX on facebook, got this reply

"Hi Dan! Thank you for your interest in LFS101x. For this course, you can upgrade to the ID Verified Certificate at any time during the course. I hope this helps!"

Finally decided to sign up for it, I hope it'll not get in the way with my college work. But this should be a good opportunity to learn more about linux :)

Thanks. Signed up. Been playing with lots of distros recently but keep going back to Arch as I love the fact it starts off as a fast blank canvas. Not made the switch though as I am a gamer and therefore stuck with Windows for now.

Installed Mint Qiana (Cinnamon) on the weekend, couldn't get on with the Ubuntu Unity interface. Took me an age to get the broadcom wifi drivers working.

There's an easy way around the unity, you can easily get the GNOME classic look. But there are also other alternatives like xubuntu, kubuntu, lubuntu ;)

In my case it was between Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Gnome classic) or Xubuntu 14.04 LTS with XFCE desktop.
