Introduction To Linux (Free Course)

Now I have Mint installed, would there be any point in me changing to Ubuntu GNOME or one of the others you suggested?

Here you can see how easy it is to do and in the terminal you just type this in.
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Going back to your question, ubuntu is based on debian and the mint is based on ubuntu/debian so I don't think there's a big difference apart from the big community that ubuntu has. By big community I mean there's more staff available on ubuntu, the distro I'm using is basically ubuntu with XFCE desktop envoriment without unnecessary programs.

Edit

Is anyone from here interested in the certificate? Will it be recognised in the UK, like someone else previously asked?

Thanks for that.

Thanks for the heads up, I've just signed up for it too :) I suspect it might be a little basic but with luck I'll learn stuff anyway.

Hi guys.

After weighing up my options I may try Ubuntu in a virtual box instead of installing it onto a 3rd HD in my system.

Can anyone point me to a good tutorial on YouTube showing me how I can do this as I have never used a virtual box before.

Also what is the best virtual box to use?

Can I use Ubuntu fully by using a virtual box?

Virtual Box is a hyper visor. Its also pretty good and most importantly free. Not sure you really need a tutorial for virtual box. Just search for it I guess in YouTube.

Maybe I didnt spend enogh time with it but I always had issues with Ubunbtu running slow in Virtualbox, might be worth a try though.
I think you can use it fully apart from specific things that need a hardware gfx card.

Not sure which is best but Virtualbox is great at what it does. For that and it's price I have not used Workstation since.

I've started the course today but am finding the 'check your understanding' sections to be incredibly slow - I'll click on 'check' and it'll take maybe 30 seconds before registering. All of the videos and normal pages seem to be loading fast, though.

Is anyone else having this problem?

After the hype I was pretty disappointed with this course, seems to be a lot of dry basic info and not a lot of video explanations.
