Introduction To Linux (Free Course)

It's certainly a bit slow to start. Personally I don't see the value in the ultra-basic GUI stuff - they're all pretty intuitive these days. I've just finished the first CLI chapter so I'm hoping that things will pick up a bit now.

After the hype I was pretty disappointed with this course, seems to be a lot of dry basic info and not a lot of video explanations.

Not the least because Ubuntu with Unity is the ******* bunch of **** ever conceived. Mint Cinnamon is where the Ubuntu love is right now.

But yeah, on a serious note, not particular impressed with the idea that people pay $1000s of dollars for this.

I've just finished the course and sat the test...

I was trying to take it seriously, but I've recently just re-cert'd for all my Apple certs and I was getting brain rot going though the material; so I've just sat the test and passed.

am I meant to get some sort of certificate? if so how do I download it?

I actually like Unity apart from the fact that it requires the keyboard to do a lot of basic things. like find and open an app. When I'm at home on my sofa I just want to open the menu and quickly be able to select the app I want without it being hidden away.

I've done the introduction part of the course but it's been pretty stale. I had much more fun doing a stage2 install of gentoo on a 600mhz AMD machine I found in a garden. Now that's Linux to me

I haven't actually started the course you but isn't it just chapters 4 and 5 that rely on Unity? The rest of it seems like it would be pretty distro-independent.

TBH you don't really need to install linux to pass the course... the exercises are very well done, where you use a virtual machine in a web browser.

but I guess it varies depending on your experience, how far you want to dig down and what you want to take away from the course.

i've registered on the site but not for the course. I'm a bit confused

I can access the course for free via "auditing" a course?

What if I decide I want to get a varified certificate after? Is that possible or do i have the pay the $250 upfront?

Asked EdX on facebook, got this reply

"Hi Dan! Thank you for your interest in LFS101x. For this course, you can upgrade to the ID Verified Certificate at any time during the course. I hope this helps!"

I doubt many people care about the certificate... if you've done the course you can still mention it on your CV if you want or simply mention that you've got some experience with linux. Its the knowledge that's important and if you're applying for a role that requires it then its fairly trivial for an employer to give you a quick test to verify....
