OMNOMONOM. Besides adding the hotspot feature to the phone, the iPad seems to have got a huge boost in the form of gestures for returning to the homescreen, bringing up the task drawer and switching between apps. It's about time we had something like this given that Photo.app uses similar gestures already.

In addition it looks like we're given a toggle switch for the usage of the mute/orientation lock switch.

I want this now! :(

What is Personal hotspot?
Free tethering?

Turn your device into a wireless internet point so that other people around you could connect to the internet through your phone. Can connect through Bluetooth or WiFi with up to 5 connections.

It would be nice to have it as a free feature but I'm sure the networks will probably try to charge for it because, you know, they like to charge for something they are not giving you anything extra for.

The hotspot thing needs to be enabled on the carrier end I believe. If that's the case I can see o2 being a complete pain about it. I wonder how this is handled for Android phones, which have had this built in as standard though.

Personal hotspot will be like tethering, where you have to pay your carrier to use the data you're already paying for.

I really can't see them letting that out for free.

No way O2 will give that for free, if they did they would be stupid.
I hope they are stupid though haha.

I guess it will be a kind of bolt on to enable it. That said it would be wicked if it just used your data plan, seeing as I have unlimited data I would win in that situation :P

So will the next iPad/iPhone have no home button (a little bit like the as of yet to be released BlackBerry Playbook)? That would be neat and I can't help but feel that Apple are going to take the wind right out of BlackBerry.

Tethering. Well it is nice of Apple to add this as it has been in Android for a while now but as per usual the backwards carriers will be all over it like a rash. This is why I worry about net neutrality...anyway.

I've finally gotten used to the rotation lock but I think when I get 4.3 I will switch it back. So much better for going between ebook reading and videos/web - the main uses of my iPad.

I imagine it'll be enabled for anyone who's bought the tethering bolt on - any charge beyond that would be something of a joke. It's well overdue as a feature too. That said I've no objection to paying for tethering, access from a tethered laptop is a completely different traffic profile and far more intensive than smartphone data, asking people to pay separately isn't terribly unreasonable based on the technical facts.

Not to blow my own trumpet but I've often said (well, not on this forum) in their quest to create devices with less and less visible seams and physical holes/buttons, that the Home button could well be done away with in order to turn more of the front of the device into a screen. Those iPad gestures are almost... obvious and while I'm not sure if the 4-5 finger ones would translate well to the iPhone the swipe up/down would. Perhaps a two finger swipe to move between apps (like you use a two finger swipe on the magic mouse to go back/forward on your browser) at least.

The new AirPlay features are *** as well.

EDIT - lol, can't you even say f t w here?!

I would be bothered about tethering if o2 or any carrier asked us to pay more, yet I have two friends with HTC Desire's who hammer the hell out of their bandwidth via their hotspot and yet don't pay a thing.

I am hoping Apple don't do away with the Home button tbh, it's iconic now! It's always good to have a hardware button rather than software - especially when it's required for DFU mode anyway. Gestures is brilliant though.

I just hope they revamp Safari now as it is aging horribly and could do with a lot more navigation bells and whistles i.e three finger swipe left/right for forward/back page navigation.

I would perhaps keep a home button on the back, opposite the camera. It's high enough that you won't accidentally press it during normal use but it's easily within reach of your index finger.

Argh, don't say anymore! I'm buying one to replace my pc this year!

Don't worry you won't need it much. Just tell the iMac to sleep and problem solved. I've rarely used my on/off button.

Having all the ports on the back, however, is more of a problem but not the end of the world.

Ive just put 4.3b on, and the 'personal hotspot' feature works flawlessly, Connected my iPad with not a single issue. I only get EDGE here at home to its obviously quite slow, I'll be interested to try it at work later in a very nice 3G area.

I love 4.3 already as the ease of browsing at work etc has increased 10 fold and on a decent sized screen :> Now to put it 4.3 on iPad, I want to try the gestures, which look very nice also. Ill report back if you like.

Thank you Apple!
