iOS to Android/S4 - Am I right to be disappointed?

Likewise, they just have "too much" going on with touchwiz now and going by the USA gs 3, poor optimisation with the snapdragon chipset wouldn't help matters (software optimisation is everything! :p), as to if they will fix/improve it, no idea.

Also, I read on XDA that apparently samsung haven't fully implemented "project butter" properly, something regarding the triple buffer iirc. will post link when I find it, it would explain why people sometimes complain about micro lag/stutter on the galaxy devices, although I can't say I ever found it a "problem" on a friend's GS 3....

edit:

here, ignore the fanboy crap:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39896471

S3 doesn't even have jelly bean triple buffering on JB nor system locked onto 60 FPS

Was also a thread on it too iirc, trying to find link...

EDIT:

Personally I think the GS 4 might come across as a bit complicated to new users (compared to stock android and sense V5) due to there being so much to touchwiz and the disjointed feel wouldn't help at all imo

thats the good part about android.. dont like it? ditch it.. get another launcher, keyboard, lockscreen what ever :)
.

This.
You're missing the point of android if you're giving up already. It doesn't have the same out of box experience as iOS. If you don't like tinkering you should probably have gotten another iPhone.

Agree on some points though. Keyboard on iOS is infinitely better than any android keyboard. Apple devices always seem to be better in direct sunlight than samsung/htc too.

Im an iOS to Android mover (to Nexus 4) and must admit I havent enjoyed it, thought Android would be a far better experience out of the box, but I constantly feel like Im only getting a small part of the experience without spending significant amount of time researching and fiddling or constantly feeling like I have to catchup...

It really feels like Im using Linux compared to Windows back in the day and having to fix/add things that beforehand I would have expected to be standard. Android suprisingly lacks a massive amount of polish for what it is...

I too moved from iOS to Android. (iP4 to HTC One)

At first I was just having to get used to what was going on, but after a few days I really began to like it a lot more. Only few tiny bugs annoy me with the phone, but have all been sorted with the update (that i'm currently waiting on...).

For keyboard, i've gone on Kii Keyboard, and I love the way in which a lot of the symbols are available from a 'long' press of a key (numbers on the top row, etc..), without having to go into symbol parts of the keyboard. Even with the extra correction thing at the top giving 3 choices, rather than just one in iOS. As a whole, very good keyboard.

For my personal uses, the phone is suited pretty well to what I do, and if these were standard with a bit of extra polish here and there, I'd never get another iPhone. Plus, I have an iPad for the iOS things anyway ;)

Pretty much the reason I left Android and went to Windows Phone (although now moving to iOS). Couldn't be bothered with all the tinkering required to get the best experience, just wanted something to work out of the box that was fast and stable.

Windows Phone ticks those boxes, but its a combination of the lack of apps and a stupidly good contract deal that I'm moving to iOS.

I have a GS2 and an iphone 5 from work.

I really don't get on with IOS; I had an iphone 4 but swapped because android suits me better.

The things that shocked me about the iphone 5 was how unimpressive it has been for me. It doesn't feel fast (apart from web pages), it stutters sometimes, the homepage layout system requires too much effort to organise on an ongoing basis, the notification centre is absurdly complicated now (too many options). I can go on.

The camera is still utterly awesome though.

In the main IOS was surprisingly poor for me. I thought I was going to be wooed but I am normally irritated by it.

I moved to Android then WP7 then back to iOS last year. Much prefer the iphone for a phone currently, have the 64gb 4S and it does everything I need on a smartphone flawlessly.

I found the lag and launcher reloads on Android so annoying, especially the launcher reload hitting the home button and then having to wait 5 10 seconds before you can use your phone again is aggravating.

Windows phone was interesting but I got it about 3 months after it came out used it for nearly a year before I got bored of the lack of apps. It very smooth and slick though.

If android can get as smooth an experience as apple would probably move back as I like a lot of things about Android, one been it's a lot cheaper than Apple :-)

Have never had any launcher reloads on my one S and I have used a number of launchers. Is that with the galaxy device? Seems to be a common problem with the galaxy s3.

My one S is super smooth and very snappy throughout using stock apps and 3rd party apps, there are only a few places that have slight micro lag but it is very rare and only specific to a few things.

Likewise with the N4.

My launcher reloads were with the Desire HD went from the iphone 3g to desire HD to a samsung omni 7 then back to the iphone 4s.

I have a stock nexus 7 and it widget redraws a lot when returning to home screen, and has jerkiness scrolling between homescreens at times, not the end of the world but annoying nonetheless considering it has a quad core cpu.

It's easy to see why people like myself only opt for Nexus devices, especially since the Nexus 4 was the first Nexus device to really match what OEMs had on the market in terms of hardware.

You can put the best hardware inside a device, which means little if you fail to provide software that doesn't offer a good all round user experience. Samsung will still sell millions of the S4 due to the sheer marketing coverage they'll have in place.

I have no idea why people complain about Android requiring a lot of work outside of the box, it really doesn't. I'm running a completely stock install of Android on my Nexus 4, without root or any custom launchers and I have zero desire to upgrade. I especially can't fathom why anyone would hold Windows Phone in high regard, I have a Lumia 820 and it doesn't even get the basics right. The only praise I can give WP is its capability with office content.

Just because it has a quad core cpu doesn't mean that it is a good processor :p It is tegra 3 which is pretty **** poor (not just the architecture of the chipset, but also to work with regarding software/driver optimisation supposedly) and shouldn't be used in a "top end" device. Plus quad core isn't properly utilised with android yet, has potential i.e. power efficiency and better multi-tasking but as of now, 4 cores bring no benefits to android at all. Better of with a high end dual core chipset where you get more performance per core like the snapdragon krait, check out the revised nexus 7 when released (if rumours are true!)

Your problems could/should be fixed with installing a 3rd party launcher like nova, has an option to keep it in memory so it shouldn't reload.

Android phones have come a long way since the desire HD especially in the performance area, imo the desire HD was pretty awful.

I have the S4 and HTC One at the moment. The One is a much more polished device and buttery smooth. The S4 does stutter and generally feels a bit chucked together.

I think you would have been happier with the One overall as Sense 5 is great and very polished.

That single channel memory controller on the Tegra 3! **SHUDDER**

Your issue is Samsung's tweaking of Android. I'm having a play with Paranoid Android and it's much better than any stock Samsung ROM by far.

Being able to have the tablet UI on my apps makes a massive difference.

Regardless a modern CPU shouldn't have problems with basic things like the UI, if it stuttered in games or whatever would be acceptable but failing on the thing that should be the simplest is terrible imho.

I've not noticed anything at all on mine

lets be honest.. there's a lot of hate towards s4 here for w/e reason :) it is a good bum phone but people are just giving the props to HO this time.. which is cool!

but one thing that i can't see getting mentioned here is that hey.. its a new phone wait for software updates and it'll get faster/smoother :)

optimization is normal, kinda like i was crazy disappointed with HO's camera at first and now after a few fixes i don't mind it, of course not happy with medium res shots but its a lot better than it was.

looks like people need something to cry about :( even though its a shame companies release headsets with bugs, build issues, stock issues and lack of software optimization!

and each release is getting worse in a way tbh.. sucks! as s4 has more than enough power to handle anything you'll throw at it.. its just that the software has probably been put together in a rush for the release and needs work.

The amount of GS4 hate is surprising...seems like a lot of people on here went for the HTC ONE because it looked nice (fair enough) and are now of course justifying their purchase, which is understandable, but wearing a bit thin.
