OK I said I set this up a while back as Im one of those people moving from iOS to Android, particularly because of a Nexus phone. Im expecting my phone any day this week so thought Id better start this as a thread for any migrant to post in questions in the hope the knowledgeable Android users on here can help in answering or directing us to answers in the hope this jump is a permanent one.

So in reality expect silly questions, basic ones and even stuff that appears to be obvious as you know how dull us iOS users are ;):p. Hopefully this might become a go to thread for any iOS to Android mover, but perhaps talk about custom roms and the like might be better suited to other threads, this is more to get people using their new device and ultimately getting the most out of it as specced...

So my first question is specific to the Nexus 4, all new phones have niggles and Im aware that with Jellybean still being pretty new that adds to that fact so any recommendations regards improved performance/battery usage please post if you dont mind

TIA

Not sure about improved performance as such, you could overclock it with SetCPU or something but it's probably not worth it for now :p

One thing I would recommend is rooting the phone (however research this first) and getting an app called AdFree Android, which requires root, but will remove ads from apps and websites in the browser.

I haven't had any issues with battery life on my Nexus 4 however you can get an app called BetterBatteryStats to monitor the usage. Download the APK file from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809

You just transfer the .apk file to your phone and run it and it will install the app. apk is much like .exe on windows.

I couldn't fault mine untill it threw itself of a perfectly flat 'safe' surface and smashed its screen on the floor without any help from me, or anyone else.

I personally found mine to be very quick and responsive. However some things you may be used to - like facebook contact integration - are not properly supported on Jellybean. You may need to use a piece of software. I personally used HaxSync. Another nice feature was the email widget allowed me to access all folders in my Hotmail account, not just the inbox - which is something my S2, or my older iPhone 3g didn't let me do.

One thing to be aware on on the N4 is swiping. I deleted a few nice photos I had by accidentally swiping them off the screen (thinking I was going to go to the next photo). Thankfully the phone allows you to auto upload all photos you take to the 'cloud', meaning you dont need to worry if you delete them off the handset. Of course you can set how this works or turn it off if you don't like it. I personally had mine set to only upload when I had connection to my wi-fi at home.

The other frustrating thing is a lot of Flash based videos will not work either, but I guess you will already be used to that. Of course there are aps to fix that.

You may actually be surprised at the lack of options in raw Jellybean. There certainly feels less customisation options on my N4 than on my S2, but re-sizable widgets is a nice feature. You have incognito browsing as well (supposedly) but my gripe with that is that windows viewed still come up as 'recently closed' tabs which the phone tells you they should not do :( I liked the idea of having a clutter free browsing experience but it didnt deliver as I expected. However the browsing experience overall is very fluid and fast.

A gripe I had was with the N4's seemingly random way of sometimes keeping games open and sometimes closing them after pressing the home 'button'. I only had Angry Birds star wars and Fragger installed and for both games it would sometimes leave them open in the background (cool) or close them so they had to restart when selected from the 'recent' list (not cool). This was annoying if I was in the middle of a level, or just wanted to quickly dive right back into a game after a momentary diversion to something else.

Battery use wise I was getting a day per charge, but heavier usage killed it quickly. This is not really the phones fault but the design of trickle charge type batteries that are mostly in use these days. They are designed to be constantly 'topped up' as most people have the ability to charge their devices in their cars, or in the office, or whilst sat at the computer at home.

I personally found massive differences in battery life depending on what I was doing. If just used it for texting, pushed emails, facebook etc and I avoided using wi-fi heavily (internet browsing) my battery would last around 36hrs. But at any point where I used the web browser, or started playing games, by battery life sapped pretty quickly into "please connect your charger". That said, considering the size of the screen, I don't think it did too badly, and certainly no worse than my S2 was. People used to blackberry devices will have a bit of a shock though - my work phone is a Torch, and even that only needs charging once a week! :p

Another issue I was having was lock screen lock ups. I would go to unlock the phone and it would freeze on the lock screen. It would do this for a good few seconds until finally loading into my homescreen. It wasnt all the time, but it happened pretty regularly. I'm not sure why. On a couple of occasions the lock screen locked up, and I had to press the screen lock button once, then once again to get it to reset the lock screen so I could get into the handset. It is a minor gripe really, but still I wasn't expecting such obvious issues with such a powerful phone on such an uncluttered OS.

I also found the screen response to faster finger movements was not always up to standard - especially when 'swiping' through long bodies of text. It seemed to somehow not behave in the way I was used to on the S2 where the speed of scrolling would increase the more times you quickly swiped your finger down/up the screen.

Finally - my main gripe was that my phone had a 'rattle' straight out of the box! Yes, it is a little anal, but it shouldn't be rattling when I shake it. It kind of made it feel cheaper somehow, and dented the 'solid' image of the build quality. I also found when tapping the back plate with my fingers it made a plasticy hollow noise, which just felt out of place seeing as the back is supposed to super tough gorilla glass!

But overall I loved this phone. Hopefully LG are not going to charge me a fortune for repairing their Kamikaze headline model. ;)

Cheers

Buff

I just moved from iPhone 4 to Nexus 4 and think it might be worth mentioning that rooting can cause problems for some stuff. I nearly rooted mine then found out Sky Go will have issues if rooted

Just to add to the root issue, it's certainly not a necessity. A lot of people here will recommend you do it because we're on a computer hardware forum but I used my HTC One X for over a year without the need for root and I have an unrooted Nexus 4 now.

The majority of customisations will work without root - changing your launcher (what your home screen looks like) including icons, changing your lock screen etc, even installing unsigned apps that aren't from the Google store. Sometimes you'll stumble across an app that requires root access but they're usually things like app backup programs, which you only really need if you change ROMs a lot.

Again, most people here will tell you to change to a custom ROM but I can't ever be doing with the faff. I'd rather stay stock and get automatic updates. You may be a few weeks behind the latest release (if that with Nexus) and be missing a few extra functions but for what I use my phone for it's much of muchness.

By all means root if you want to, but you don't NEED to.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about having to mess with stuff to get a good Android experience. It is such a good platform now and it keeps a very good balance between allowing freedom and making sure the essentials work very well.

Yes, rooting certainly is not a necessity, but I do recommend it. Personally I couldn't live without root anymore and I've never had any problems with it.

I always end up unlocking/rooting/romming my phones for various reasons. It's nice to have AdAway and the advanced features of Cerberus working properly. For me, it's also great to be able to tinker.

I was just coming here to say my phone has a rattle. It sounds like they lost a tiny little screw in the case at the top of the phone by the earpiece. Didn't notice any resonance on a quick call to voicemail but I do hear it rattle every time I place it down on a flat surface (or shake it).

Anybody else get this?

From earlier in the thread do I remember correctly that if you RMA the phone you get to keep it till the replacement arrives? Also anyone know if they are sending out new or repaired RMA/DSR returns?

Yup, a lot of phones also have something similar which if not the auto-focus is the vibrate motor. My girlfriend's original Galaxy S does a 'boing' when you tap the back which is just that.

Now you mention the vibrate part - I also remember my old PS2 controllers rattling a little when you shook them. Do they use like a mini centrifuge or something?

I want mine fixed - as much as I love my S2, I want to be using my N4.

Ohhh, by the way - my microsim was delivered in a full size sim card 'template' and I had to cut it out. However my S2 uses a normal SIM. So I just placed the microsim back in the hole and eased it into my S2 and it works a treat! I didnt think it would because the chip and contact points on the microsim are so much smaller, but it works!

Nice idea for a thread. :)

I've only had a little play at the moment so don't have any specific questions (I'm sure I will in time), but if anyone fancies posting details of any apps they consider to be really essential or particulary good that would be great. I realise there is an essential android apps thread, but its somewhat large and spans a few years.

This is the best thing to look at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtXAqx_4jQDadENfUWd4a1drSXFJdTNhSXBISjM3RVE#gid=24

Prior to getting the N4 that's exactly how I used my microsim for the past year. :p

Yep, if you ever take a phone apart you'll see it. It's just a tiny rotating motor with a cylinder cut in half on it so it spins out of balance.

Oh and the contact points on a MicroSIM and standard-sized SIM are exactly the same size-wise. I've no idea why SIMs were the size they are to start with.

Excellent ta for the advice guys, lets try and keep it on topic though! I need to re-read this once Ive got my phone, still unsure about the benefits of rooting and also how easy that is to switch on and off for certain apps that refuse to install once rooted.

I like the idea it unlocks the phone more, but unless I know of a 'killer app' for it it kinda seems pointless, Im sure for things like RDP,VPN it might be a must.

My next question which I should have got sorted already, but seems to be a head scratcher especially thinking long term is how to sync and make my email, calender, notes and reminders platform independent so its easily viewable and editable across Android, iOS, webOS and of course Windows and OSX. I get the feeling every time I change 'sides' I might have to fiddle which will get annoying - is Google Apps actually platform independent, I swear I saw somewhere about WM8 and Google Apps, but might have incorrectly remembered that...

Now thats a doozey! And no I dont want to build my own exchange server :p

Not sure about all the things you mentioned, but I already use gmail so that bit was fine. I copied my contacts to my gmail account so they followed me, and did the same with my calendar entries.
