iOS to Nexus 4 movers in here - Android 'Geniuses' wanted to answer dumb questions!

It's pretty platform independent.

It uses Exchange ActiveSync currently, but that is very shortly going be binned off in favour of IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV as they are open standards.

More or less everything supports that, with the exception being Windows Phone and Cal/CardDAV. Why it's not supported I don't know, but it's really something they should change, it's an open standard FFS.

It's nice to have AdAway and the advanced features of Cerberus working properly.

Pretty much the reasons I root, I never change ROM.

OP you'll find that Android just works too, best bet is just to browse play for interesting apps and see which ones get good recommendations here, xda and avforums n such like even magazines like Android can be helpful if about 2/3 months behind the times.

Not sure about all the things you mentioned, but I already use gmail so that bit was fine. I copied my contacts to my gmail account so they followed me, and did the same with my calendar entries.
Unfortunately the vast majority of my stuff is on Mobileme for similar reasons, so I need to get that transferred but obviously only once as its a bit of hassle I didnt want (though part of that is more how I want it to work rather than the move itself - currently working out if I can be bothered enough to move off ISP email to my own domain/email service). Be nice to have it so it doesnt matter what platforms Im using - shame about WM but can live with that, always just using the website directly I guess...

I wasnt aware of what the backbone was, actually assumed it was already IMAP but thats good and by the time WM is popular enough to warrant Google apps will be before I jump ship there anyhow. Windows 8 superfluous nature has put me off MS products for a bit!

Unfortunately the vast majority of my stuff is on Mobileme for similar reasons,

Are you on an iPhone currently? I tried syncing my contacts with gmail but that didn't seem to work, so I downloaded an app called 'my contacts backup', this took all my contacts and chucked them into a vcf file which I could then import into gmail. Seemed a fairly quick and easy solution.

I couldn't fault mine untill it threw itself of a perfectly flat 'safe' surface and smashed its screen on the floor without any help from me, or anyone else.
Has this happened to anyone else? I came back from a shower and found my phone had somehow fallen off my flat table.

Silly question time, VMs my ISP and uses Google Apps (or maybe just GMail) for email web access, would that mean I could log that in as my google account and expect that my emails would be picked up that way? Im guessing not and Ill have to use old fashioned plain IMAP access.

Its become apparent to me that Ive also got a seperate Google account using the same email address which has my Wallet, Youtube etc setup against it, but obviously not my email.

Bit annoying that the same 'log in' name has partial features from 2 sources! On top of that the OU uses Google Apps for all its student services - so now Im a bit more confused how to set this all up nicely...

Yeah Im still on the iP4, got my contacts sync with MobileMe and saved on Outlook on my desktop so I guess I can pull them over from either source, though they need a tidy up as iCloud buggered them up a bit!

You can see I havent been that forward thinking with how my information is stored, jsut so used to having that one device that just pulls in all together, but perhaps its time to tidy it all up...

For the email thing, you can set up multiple Google accounts and receive email from all of them. I've got my main Gmail account, and a second one for business and set it up just to sync mail from that one.

Hopefully an easy one.

I used the 'notes' app on my iPhone quite a lot, I linked it to gmail so I can see my old notes within gmail via a browser, but not sure what the best app is to use for notes on Android.

I just want something very simple, it doesn't need loads of features, but I'd like it to link to gmail so I can see/edit all my existing notes. Any suggestions, what do people use?

Does Evernote do the same thing? Was thinking of using that as I know its pretty much on all platforms I use...

Hmm no, that doesn't seem to do what I want. It puts them under tasks in gmail rather than the normal notes section. Then again I guess that might be okay.

I use gtasks.

Got to resurrect this as Ive succumbed to having to root! I need to back up my N4 without root though first, any suggestions for good programs to use? Is Carbon/Helium the one to use for this?

I need to keep app/game data (like Real Racing 3 and Whatsapp) and my SMSs mainly, photos/music Ill just manually move over to my PC via USB. Think thats the obvious data requirements...

TIA

Use this to backup without root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844032

Then this to unlock, root, install recovery in one step: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688

Is there a way to reverse this if desired?

I think ps3ud0 and I both have the same reasons for wanting to root all of a sudden!

Oh of course TheVoice :)

I was looking at using:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
to backup then:

to root

Ill look at that instead rather use tools others here use so I know they work - really dont want to lose my Real Racing save game!

Hmm like the idea of the Ultimate Backup Tool and the Nexus 4 Toolkit, out in a bit so forced to try this later tonight, will look for tutorials how to use them first and give it a go - might even whack on PA that seems to get rave reviews for the N4.
