iOS to Nexus 4 movers in here - Android 'Geniuses' wanted to answer dumb questions!

OK just got back and gonna try it now - think I just need to do this:

Install Android SDK to get Android windows drivers
USB degugging mode on my N4
Run UBT.bat as admin and set path and backup app and device data (option 4)
The root (still need to read how to do this)
Restore via UBT.bat
?
Profit!

Bah cant seem to get UBT to see my phone (device offline error) - will try later! Didnt realise Android didnt have a full standard backup process...

Are you all rooted now P3eudo? If so, Titanium Backup is your friend :)

If not, what do you actually need to back up? All your contacts will be in Google, as will your emails (if not, set up a rule to forward to your GMail). There are apps around that allow you to backup your texts to a .csv file and reload them (SMS Backup and Restore, I think). You may need to redownload a few apps and reload your music, but I always found wiping and starting anew much easier than faffing around with UBT.

It's interesting how this board has filled up with people from the Console Games forum...

e: Apologies, just read your above post. Not positive, but I assume you can just find the Real Racing file and pull it across to your PC? And given Whatsapp's ubiquity, I bet there's a backup app for it somewhere.

Game saves tbh, not rooted as I didnt unlock the bootloader so need to backup before I bother to root. Getting an error with Ultimate Backup Tool but cant find any details what it means.

And no none of my stuff is with Google, as for some reason I have to have a googlemail account and silly me just created a Google Wallet account off my normal email address just to buy the phone...

EDIT: Just saw your edit, tbh if it doesnt work Ill just wont bother fiddling and leave well be...

Hmm, fair enough - not sure what to suggest then I'm afraid! I've never bothered with UBT or any other backup tools myself.

Ta for advice, Ill give it another fiddle after MoTD, might use Carbon/Helium backup and try that. UBT seems pretty naff, so little documentation out there!

Jelly bean has a native backup tool accessible via adb commands. Or use a toolkit with these functions saves having to manually type these commands yourself. It creates a backup file which you can restore later.

OK seems my device is offline when trying 'adb devices' even though the SDK Manager says I have the newest SDK Tools. Seems some bother about 4.2.2 and having to ensure your PC has up-to-date SDK software.

Still cant get it to work :/, gonna try ClockWorkMod Carbon and if that doesnt Ill give in!

EDIT: At last my PC got a adb fingerprint thingy so now I can see it as a device!

OK still having trouble with this!

In the middle of trying to root using Nexus 4 Toolkit v2 - basically I went into fastboot on the phone and then choose option 8 to unlock and root etc (the 1 click option). The problem is now its stuck waiting for the device, even though it has rebooted and wiped and Ive reenabled USB debugging and ensured the PC fingerprint is set to always when prompted.

Ive unplugged and replugged the USB cable and swapped between MTP and PTP. Not sure what to do, I assume all its done is unlocked the bootloader but nothing else - I decided to choose TWRP recovery as that was recommended...

Code:
STEP 2: Setting up Root on your device

Booting to Android OS for first time setup

====================================================================================
Your device will now boot into Android. It may reboot once during this period.
The ToolKit will then wait until you complete the setup wizard and enable USB
debugging in Settings, Developer Options. The procedure will then continue.

If you get stuck on 'Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled' and have already
enabled usb debugging then just unplug/replug the usb cable and it should proceed.

You can also try pulling down the notifiation screen, then click on 'connected as'
and change from MTP to PTP Mode.

On Android 4.2.2 when you replug the usb cable after enabling usb debugging for the
first time you will get a popup asking you to authenticate your pc.
Tick 'Always allow' then click 'ok' and everything should carry on as normal.
====================================================================================

rebooting...

finished. total time: 0.003s

Procedure will continue in 25 seconds

Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled

Continuing in 10 seconds

Rebooting back into Fastboot Mode..

Booting into Android using an Insecure Boot Image..

< waiting for device >
The only thing I can think of to do is to manually go into fastboot mode as it should normally do it automatically

EDIT: OK manually going into fastboot worked - was worried I was gonna brick it by powering it down - phew!
EDIT2: At last Im rooted and bootloaders unlocked!

Deleting files on Android

Bit of a change of topic, but hopefully someone can help. I've noticed deleting files on Android is a bit hit and miss.

For example, if I download something from Chrome, I can see it in the "Downloads" app. I then delete it from that app and it appears gone, but if you browse the memory of the phone it's still sat in the Downloads folder.

Similar issue for videos, I've downloaded TED Talks, then deleted them but they still show up in the Gallery app.

Does Android not delete things immediately but clear stuff out at certain times?
