So everyone knows they won't be giving the update to 2G users.

What does this mean, will there be apps on the appstore that won't install due to not having the up to date iOS even though we have no way of upgrading to the newer version? This is going to really devalue the 2G's further and in some cases, you won't be able to get updates for apps you own...

Well done Steve you money grabbing...

The 2G is has been end of life for a while now (since the 3GS came out). Now the 3GS is the bottom model and the 3G is effectively end of life (it doesn't support a lot of the iOS4 functions)

Complaining about your 2G being not supported any more is like Power PC Mac owners complaining that OS X is no longer supported on their computers.

Keep iOS3 or buy a new phone...

It's very similar hardware to that of the 3G phone though, there's no reason other than greed (as usual with Jobs) that the 2G can't remain to be supported.

Trying to liken it to PowerPC to x86 architecture is ludicrous.

I think its fair enough to stop supporting the original iPhone after 3 years. There is only so much time they can spend supporting the device. Its a good thing for App Developers too I would imagine. The 2G is quite underpowered in comparison to the newer models.

I would imagine a fair comparison is comparing it to IE6?

thought this was amusing on buzz out loud.

So when the lovely and talented Mr. Jobs said that the iOS 4 upgrade would be free for all iPhone and iPod touch users, I lost it, relishing the impending BOL tirade on Apple’s accounting hypocrisy.

Over the years, they’ve charged early adopters $10 – $20 to upgrade early generation models to the latest and greatest, claiming their evil accountants were FORCING them to charge for the upgrade because these upgrades introduced additional functionality and that accounting rules MANDATED that they charge for the upgrade.

With iOS 4, they want the pool of iAd-capable devices to be as large as possible so magically their accounting rules no longer apply and they can give away updates for free– so long as there’s something in it for them.

So to the 3G.

A game like Angry Birds is not perfectly smooth on the 3G and on occasion lags for a few seconds. You don't get that on a 3GS.

If developers had to create apps that ran perfectly on older hardware then they won't be able to take advantage of newer hardware available on later models.

The 3G is now end of life. Do you expect Apple to support both the 3G and 2G even though they are end of life? Nowt to do with greed. These two phones are getting too slow to support new apps.

Exactly how Power PC architecture was support for a while then killed. The 3G/2G has had their day. The 3G gets a limited iOS4 but that's a parting gift.

Like I said your phone has had it's time. Keep iOS3 or get a new one.

As a 2G owner myself it is a bit annoying, but while you're not gaining anything from iOS4 you're not losing anything either in terms of the way the phone functions at the moment.

The issue I think the OP has is that the App development moves on.

As a hobbyist developer I can say that the SDK pushes on. New releases may not even be compatible with older phones as the development eco-sphere at the front of it all pushes forward.

Jobs doesn't do anything without the golden rule - what is in it for me? Or more precisely - where is the value for me? Perfect business sense.

I have a 2G and it is a dog now :D Rally would like to upgrade but can't afford (bike purchase).

It's really not _that_ bad, since upgrading to latest firmware mine actually feels faster.

I compared it against my girlfriends iPod Touch 3G and things do load a bit faster.
