Hi guys,

I managed to get my sons computer built and everything installed, he has internet connection via an Ethernet cable from the 2nd port of my ASUS RT-AC3200.

I have installed various games for him but when I checked his IP address it has the same IP address as mine via http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup.

Now I'm worried if he does something stupid such as hack or something (remotely possible) It then runs the risk of my accounts also being banned.

Is there a way of him being provided with a different IP address than that of mine.

I'm sorry, I don't have a clue about network settings etc so your help would be appreciated.

~Mark.

That IP would be your external IP address, not your internal one. If you are using DHCP, an IP address will be assigned dynamically each time the PC is powered on and connected to the router.

Assuming you mean gaming accounts - realistically, only his accounts would be banned.

IP address bans are manual and are only going to be handed out by the admins of the community/servers where the hacking has taken place.
Unless you're playing on the same servers together, regularly, then I'd not worry too much.

OK so its nothing I should be worried about then, I just hope he is sensible enough and of the mature mind not to do foolish things.

Edit..

Is there not a solution of changing the external IP address of my sons PC, he is currently using windows 10

Not unless you change your internet connection to one with multiple public IP addresses. Not all ISPs will offer such a connection and you'll also find that the router setup is more complicated and most likely requires you to buy new hardware.

Your external IP will change when you restart it anyway, or when the connection drops. So if he did get the IP ban somewhere, it isn't going to be an issue for long.

I suppose the only way your accounts would be ban is if he was constantly harassing a server or somebody and they decided to look up all accounts that use the same IP and ban those as well.

No guarantee that the IP will change. It'll depend on how the ISP manages their IP allocations. Virgin WAN IPs for example are very sticky.

One possible option for multiple IPs would be to use a VPN service for your son's PC. Not saying it's a good idea, but it should be possible.

I maintain 2 steam accounts, one for me, one for my lad. My lad knows if any game of mine is banned thru his actions, he is liable to buy me a new copy.

Is IP Banning still a thing these days?

VAC bans are more of a worry than IP bans. IP bans are rather useless.

All consumer broadband packages only provide 1 IP per internet connection, so no, it's not possible.

I wouldn't be worried about it though, I was in a student home with 4 other gamers on the same internet connection/external IP, we sometimes played on the same server, no issues at all when one was banned.

Not to mention your IP will actually change itself every now and then. There's static IP which your broadband provider can provide you with an IP address unique to you but not every broadband package does this and sometimes costs extra.

I guess if you're really that worried, get another internet connection to your PC :p.
