Well, I’m a bit narked. I bought my iPad 3 a few months back and now it’s obsolete!

In all seriousness though, as the new chip is touted as being twice as fast at CPU tasks, I’m guessing it would make a worthy update? Subjective I know. I use the iPad as a gaming platform amongst other things so would it make sense to upgrade if I am able?

How much do you reckon I could sell my 32gb WiFi iPad3 for? If I could get £400 for it that would only mean an £80 splurge to get the equivalent iPad4 and I have some Currys vouchers for that much. I’ve read on these boards that a lot of people upgrade by selling their old devices so maybe this is the way to go?

I’m not one to insist on having the best tech, I have an iPhone 4 and will for a long time to come as I’m getting it replaced due to a faulty Gyro. I just don’t like the idea of the 3 being a slower version of the4 which will now be the benchmark system for game development (I would expect).

Tell me about it, I'm really annoyed especially considering mine is under a month old :( and because it wasn't purchased from the Apple store (on their own bloody advice!) I'm left completely in the cold.

Got mine from Argos, on the request of the Apple store in Birmingham BullRing =/

They were out of stock of 16GB models and said its due to popularity, I could wait until the end of November for the next big shipment or go to another reseller, after all "If theres any issues you can still come here and get the same great Apple care experience!"

.. except in this situation, its like banging your head into a brick wall.
Argos are the only company in the world with a ridiculous no returns policy it seems, and Apple just say "Well, should have purchased it from us!"

The Apple Care rep agrees with me that the "its out of stock because its so popular!" was a big lie, and stock constraints were in place due to a refresh, but still don't see why I'm in any position to be annoyed.

They also flogged me that "you have no need to worry sir, we support all our devices for at least 5-6 years so your device will continue to be great for a long time to come".

I replied with "IOS 6, iPad 1.. yeah 5 years you say?"
and got a "well, obviously in exceptional circumstances such as the hardware just not being up to task.."
To which i replied, "so clearly not 5 years then? so in 2 years time the chances of my iPad 3 being in the same situation?"
him: "Obviously we can't guarantee that.."
me: "But you said 5 years?"
him: "look, I'm sorry sir there is nothing that can be done, i hope you have learnt your lesson about shopping elsewhere and have a good day"

I said yeah, okay .. and put the phone down.

Raging.

It's not obsolete. It's as good as it was before yesterdays announcement.

What does your current iPad 3 struggle with?

How much do you reckon I could sell my 32gb WiFi iPad3 for? If I could get £400 for it that would only mean an £80 splurge to get the equivalent iPad4 and I have some Currys vouchers for that much. You're just chasing the shiny shiny. Materialism at it's finest.

I’m not one to insist on having the best tech, I have an iPhone 4 and will for a long time to come as I’m getting it replaced due to a faulty Gyro. I just don’t like the idea of the 3 being a slower version of the4 which will now be the benchmark system for game development (I would expect).

Which is it, you don't feel the need to have the best tech or you do?

Honestly all the whining is comical. You a buy a product and there's no clause or guarantee that comes with it that says "we promise not to release another for at least 12 months".

Enjoy your device it's still fantastic.

Im annoyed, not uber annoyed, but annoyed at the product refresh.
Im raging over the crap and lies the company tried to feed me through their phone service listed above.

"oh 5 years sir .." yeah, right.

4 srs? I doubt you'll notice the speed difference unless they were side by side and you were opening/playing heavy 3D games and stuff like that. Given the battery life, the weight, the screen and the design are identical it seems rather pointless to upgrade. iPad 1 owners had a much lighter, thinner iPad 2 to tempt them, 2 owners had the Retina display... is a processor and gpu on an identical display that tempting?

I can see why they upgraded it - this brings the iPad release schedule/tech in line with the iPhone rather than lagging 6 months behind, means the main bulk of their CPU production will be the newest process, no old ports on the flagship model - but it's very much a 3G to 3GS sort of upgrade without much appeal to me as a 3rd gen owner. It's good in a way because it means that the 5th gen iPad will be a brand-new design and we'll get it this time next year hopefully, which increases the lifespan of my current one.

I've only just got the previous called 'new iPad' as well, got it through 3 (£99 for the iPad and then a 24 month contract priced at £25 a month). I reckon I'll get in contact with them and see if there's anything they can do about upgrading me but if they cant the iPad 3 is still a massive improvement over my previous 1st generation iPad in terms of performance so I'm not that bothered

There's no point in changing from a 3 to a 4... There's nothing that a 4 can do that a 3 can't... I doubt that there is any difference in the user experience.

It'll load FIFA quicker!

My first iPhone was a 3GS, I then got a 4S. I only got the 5 because of the bigger/better screen - the idea now will be unless there's a completely killer feature I'll hold off on the '5S' and get a 6.

Same with the iPad - the first one I got was the 3 - the next one I'll get will be the redesign which will hopefully be lighter, thinner and have the Mini style smaller bezel with the 'thumb rejection'.

@uniQ My comment about the 3 being obsolete was not serious :p

My concern is that with the iPad games market blosoming, big shiny 3D titles developed for the 4 as the high-end benchmark would struggle (Comparitively) on the 3. Lili for instances is a very good looking game but on occaision you can sense that the boundaries are being pushed.

Yeah, I suppose I am chasing the shiny to some extent but I think this is due to the close proximity of the upgrade to my purchase date. If this happened in March for instance I would not seriously be considering the same.

I suppose the bottom line is this. I bought the iPad first and foremostly to play Baldurs Gate :D . The 3 will still do this without breaking a sweat.

Another narked "new" iPad owner here!

I bought mine thinking I could upgrade it when the yearly refresh comes out and still get a decent price for it as its only one generation older!

Now it's going to be 2 generations older and my guess is come the next refresh Second hand buyers will avoid the Third gens in favour of the fourth.

There are a few reasons i pay extra ( Apple Tax) for Apple products and one of them is i am able to get a good second hand price for my current model to fund the next because theres always a year between refreshes!

I bought mine back in July, a little irritating they've bumped the processor but it's a great device and has served me well enough (although ironically the only complaint I had was the occasional stutter or slow rendering of complicated pages).

It does make me wonder what they're going to release next though, the processor would have been an obvious area but now what?

One other thing. I to like others bought there New iPad to play games thinking we'd have the top spec that would last at least a year!

I bet it's only a matter of weeks till we see extra enhancements for the Gen 4's :(

Apple have irritated me twice in recent months.
First with the iOS6 maps rubbish and now with this.
One of the reasons I buy Apple products is that they have a 1 year+ refresh cycle, meaning I get good use out of a device and then sell it when the next version comes out while there is still a decent amount of retained value in the product.
I really hope Apple aren't reading the HTC playbook on product refreshes.

The reason for the upgrade is because the A6 chip was not ready when the new iPad was released. The A5X did not give the performance Apple wanted with so many pixels. The iPad 3s performance is on par with the iPad 2, and was not performance upgrade. With new tablets being released for the Christmas period Apple had to catch up in performance.

Many big titles have been delayed such as Infinity Blade because the iPad 3 struggles to run then.

Apple are still showing this as a minor upgrade, they are not pushing it as an all new device, which may mean that they will announce 'The new ipad' in spring.

Is the iPad 3 outdated... Yes if you are using it for gaming, because it will struggle to cope with the new lineup of big titles.

But this was all known back in January/February, everyone new the A6 was not ready.
