Dont really see how people can recommend an iPad for travelling at all.
For sheer simplicity at a fraction of the price get a netbook. A couple of months typing emails and uploading pictures on an iPad will make you rage (not that on the iPad you have any method of transferring pics from your Camera anyway).
Being able to charge stuff via USB will be useful (Phone/Camera/MP3 etc) to cut down on the number of chargers you are required to take.
The ability to simplistically multi-task, rest it on your lap comfortably, replace the battery (or any other part) in the case of an emergency, use webcam/skype style software so that family can see you, the magnitude of free software...
