Rofl @ that.

Can't believe how massive this problem is, they really might have shot themselves in the foot with this one.

I'll post this in here & the official iPhone 4 thread, just so maximum people see how to replicate the signal problem.

It's the clearerest video detailing the issue.

Couldnt get it to do it earlier at work, but been out this evening and can definitely replicate the problem

Some people think it is linked to an underlying weak signal, so if you have really good signal you may not notice it.

i would 100% agree with that, couldnt get it to do it at work at all, having said tat did have all 5 bars earlier and still managed to get it to drop to nothing (on orange)

This could be quite a big problem. I don't see how Apple could hack around it in the OS even if they wanted to - if 4.0.1 made the phone display full bars whilst still dropping calls, the foul play would just be too obvious. Perhaps there's something in the baseband software which can be tweaked to work around the issue. If not, it'll have to be fixed with a hardware change and buyers given the option of a replacement. Could get expensive for Apple, but I daresay the damage to the iPhone's image could be worse than the financial loss.

To me, this is a hardware issue, and the solutions are

1 - bumpers
2 - replacements
3 - recall and repair

No.3 is out as it seems to be a design fault, and require augmentation at factory. So what they are probably going to do, like nintendo did with the wiimote jacket is that you get a free bumper to solve it, and make a change in the design to fix it for the next batch and pretend it never happened. A bit like xbox RROD problem.

Thiey need to do this SOON, or its reputation will be ruined.

I think they'd have to be brave to palm people off with bumpers! I can see plenty of people being unhappy with a £600 phone that they have to keep in a piece of plastic just to make a call. Is a phone legally fit for purpose if it can't make phone calls when being held as one generally holds a phone?

Yup, refund time!

However, if you know it happens, willing to live with it, it would difficult to argue it 6 months on though.

Do you think this issue is related to the white version being delayed - and the now three-week delay for any more orders? As in, the white versions have generally been released after the black ones in the past (I believe) and the black ones have been made in huge amounts ready for release. Perhaps they were aware of the issues AFTER the first, large batch were made.

Just a thought.

Hope we get some kind of response from Apple soon. Longer we don't hear something the worse it is, will probably take back early next week if no news from Apple over this weekend.
