About a week ago my iPhone started showing a 'SIM Failure' message across the screen and 'Invalid SIM' instead of a signal bar. However if I turn the phone on and off again, it is able to make and receive calls and texts as normal. Is there a simple fix or will I have to go to Orange / Apple get the phone replaced?

Think its to do with the tray you put the simcard in, something along the lines of the metal part of the sim is touching the metal part of the tray.

I have tried to reseat the SIM card, will see if it helps. I found it strange how it just started doing this after having it since release day.

You'll need a new SIM. My iPhone 4 did this. I got Vodafone to transfer my number to another Micro SIM I had handy and BOOM no more problems.

My new SIM from Orange arrived on Saturday. Got it all set up and all was working fine, until I went out to the shop this morning, when I got back I had the SIM failure message again.

I had exactly the same problem with an orange sim card. Spoke to an Apple Genius on the phone who advised getting a new sim card as it was highly unlikely to be the phone.

After 2 hours with the new sim card installed had exactly the same problem.

Booked an appointment at the Apple store and they swapped my phone for a brand new 4S without any quibble.

Had the new phone a few weeks and has worked perfectly since.

The SIM ERROR will annoy you massively, as you'll miss all your calls and texts without evening knowing!!

After spending the best part of 2 hours on the phone to orange yesterday I was advised to do the fix detailed here;

This, surprise surprise, didn't work, so I’m back off to the orange shop to complain some more, and hopefully get a replacement iPhone out of them.
