iPhone 5 reservation, how does it work?

At 09:00 this morning I filled out the online reservation thing for an iPhone 5 for collection at an Apple Store.

When do they send out the emails? What are my chances of actually getting one reserved? I've not really looked into availability at all as I wasn't ready to buy until now.

I got an email at about 9pm the day I reserved it telling me it was available the next day.

I filled the form in on the Saturday afternoon of launch weekend, so I'd imagine you'll have no trouble at all. Next day I popped up to the store and there it was. I was amazed actually, makes me wonder why everyone queues outside the shop in tents etc?

Ahh good, I was expecting to see something during business hours although I suppose 21:00 is business hours for the shops!

Tomorrow is my first day back at work after just over two weeks off, that'll be interesting if I suddenly shoot off for a slightly extended lunch break as the Apple store is around 25 minutes to half hour drive away :)

Which model are you looking for exactly? While it doesn't necessarily reflect on your local shop, you may be able to pick up a 16GB or 64GB model (more likely white than black) if you just walk in. My local store did have 16GB white models in stock, though not sure about others. Of course, 32GB models are the most popular and are difficult to get hold of.

I received my email at around 7:30pm. Reserved four (black 32GB and 64GB at both of the shops near me) and only managed to reserve a 64GB at the one in town.

Yes you have to try pretty much everyday between 9 and 5, it doesn't matter when you put in as it's a lottery. You can also submit reservations at multiple stores.

I didn't realise it was a lottery. I thought it was a case of first come, first served. Only one store is close enough for me to get to and back at lunchtime so I've only tried the one reservation. It'll happen eventually.

No wonder there are supply issues if people are buying four! Why would you want 4 of them?

Not buying four, reserving four presuming I'd get two reservations at most. If you don't turn up within your specified time it goes back on general sale, and if I got all four reservations (which I didn't, just the one), I'd cancel the ones I didn't want anyway.

When I picked mine up they were getting stock around once a week. In my case it was the first stock they had since launch day.

Feek, you shouldn't have too many problems getting a 64GB white when they come back in stock anyway, not a popular model.

Just keep trying, I was lucky I got one after only the second try with a few days gap between the first and second tries. May be up here in NE Scotland helps too!

It isn't random, it IS first come, first serve.

Just keep trying, I've been told that stores get weekly (and sometimes daily) deliveries.

My mate picked one up a few days ago using this system and I picked one up two days after launch using it!

Not saying it is or isn't, but this is what I've been told, and it does appear to be first come, first serve.

Took me five tries to get it this way. Chances are the reason you aren't getting reservations is merely because there aren't any in stock.

I've been told that it's a lottery system as well by someone on the phone at the Covent Garden store.

I've tried reserving a few times and finally got one to pick up yesterday but I had to go out so missed out on it. :(

Just put in my first reservation attempt for one. If I'm successful what generally is the time window they give you for pickup?

They give you an allocated hour in which to pick it up but there is an option to change the time between any hour in the day.
I have been told though that the time they give you is irrelevant as long as you go on the day the reservation is set for you should be fine.

Good stuff!

Cheers.

I’ll be amazed if I get one on my first go, really can’t see it happening.

If it's first come, first served then I can only speculate that they've not had any 64Gb white phones in stock as each day I've been there within microseconds of the clock ticking over at 09:00.
