iPhone 5S leak points to high-resolution Retina+ display

Apple's upcoming iPhone 5S may receive a higher-resolution display dubbed Retina+ that will help it better compete with Full HD devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The successor to Apple's popular iPhone 5, the iPhone 5S is thought to be launching later this year alongside a low-cost iPhone model with last-generation hardware and a polycarbonate plastic casing. While its as-yet unconfirmed launch partner might be cutting corners on the specifications, fresh rumours suggest Apple is going all-out on the iPhone 5S in response to the growing number of Full HD Android smartphones on the market.

According to Chinese-language news site Wei Feng, which cites unnamed industry insiders, Apple's next-generation iPhone 5S smartphone will include a Retina+ display that packs more pixels into the same physical dimensions as the iPhone 5. Along with the higher-resolution display, the site's sources confirm earlier rumours that Apple will be launching the iPhone 5S in a variety of colours - beyond the usual choice of black or white casings - and will include fingerprint-scanning technology and a high-resolution 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The site's sources state that the iPhone 5S will have 1.5 million pixels in its display, which equates to a 1,650x930 resolution panel - significantly higher than the 1,136x640 offered by the current iPhone 5. In terms of pixels-per-inch - a measure of image density - that's equivalent to an increase from 326PPI in the iPhone 5 to 473PPI if the iPhone 5S retains the 4in display of its predecessor.

While that leaves the iPhone 5S trailing rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S4 in terms of absolute resolution, it would put the smaller-screen iPhone 5S at the top of the tree in pixel density.

Now I know apple are wonderful chaps, and full of good publicity gubbins, but when they launched 'retina' and trademarked it, or copyrighted the idea, they stated the pixel density was high enough that the eye could no longer tell the difference.
With this in mind, if the screen doesn't get any bigger, is there any point at all in increasing the pixel density, bar to correct for previous lies, and to attempt to claim some form of bragging rights?

I know Apple are a company based around excellent marketing and alleged ease of use to the masses. If retina was as they say, is there actually any physical point to increasing res?

Since when has Computer Shopper been a reputable mac news source? :p

There is absolutely no substance to this rumour - Don't panic :p

I'll put this in here:

Apple is rumored to be working on a more affordable iPhone for quite some time and even Tim Cook's denial of its existence isn't slowing down the gossip train. Today, purported images of the low cost iPhone have been spotted in China, pointing to a curvy plastic body in unison with previous reports.

I'm not at all sure about the 'more affordable' iPhone concept. It could hurt Apple.

It depends on the internals and the emerging market seems to be where its at now, and most of the 1st world is starting to slow down. Just look at the yoy growth, I believe the 4s form 4 was at 85% and iphone 5 to 4s is around 8% or so.

I think if it clearly looks cheaper then the high end iPhones it could be good, moreover that the iPhone 5 will have to get cheaper every year and it is clearly an expensive device to make. This strategy of during the iPhone price every year was fine with the 3g/3gs but I think its already starting to hurt them with the iPhone 4/4s and will only get worse with the iPhone 5.

A cheap iPhone will be for poorer country's, so maybe up north may see them.

Maybe it's to do with homogenising the res across all Apple devices? Or at least iPhone-ipad mini

They should increase the size of the iPhone, even if it is to just 4.3".

& the northern counties have no problem with their spelling HAz. The idea behind it, is to aim it towards developing countries, as the iPhone seems completely out of reach, where as one around 60% of the price, may be more accessible. But it will only be aimed to their markets, so Devon won't see them ;)

I'm unsure whether this is true. If it is, I can see it being about £400 making it almost pointless to many. The price of £230 comes up quite often but what would a £230 iphone do to their ipod touch sales? If I could buy a brand new iphone for £230, I don't think i'd spend much more than £100 for 'just' an ipod. Certainly not £170 or anything like that.

I wish they would say when the new one is coming out, I could upgrade now but am holding off till the next iphone.
