I've always wondered this. Is the whole "charge your phone for 24 hours before use" still true?
No. Modern lithium ion batteries prefer regular topping up and have over-volt circuits built in, so keeping them plugged in longer than necessary does nothing.
To calibrate the battery you can leave it drain completely then perform a 100% charge but I wouldn't do that on the first charge. Typically I only do that when I notice the phone dropping to 98% charge immediately after unplugging from a full charge overnight.
