Iphone apps

Although it seems the iPhone is the 'app' magnate, having had a Hero for a few months and seen the rate of Apps appearing coupled with Googles seemingly increasing momentum, coupled with WinMo 7 pushing for apps, I really am not too worried, any company that is worth their salt will target as many plaforms as they can for maximum effect, and lets face it, the difference between an Android/WinMo and iPhone apps from a coding perspective is very small, so it's not like it's a huge effort to migrate from one to another platform.

When I popped down to see friends/family over Christmas, it did feel like everyman and his dog had iPhones, and where happy to show me their favourite 'killer' apps, but I was surprised that most of them I could get either the same app, or similar on Android, things like Shop Savvy, Sat-nav etc. In fact when I mentioned Co-pilot is only £19.99 for full off-line sat-nav they where quite taken back (Tomtom costs a fortune on the iPhone)..

Im having the same realisation as [TW]Fox but from the opposite end - I have an iPhone and considering which phone platform to move onto but cant find anything that offers the whole package that the iPhone does when you consider the App Store - really feel like Im locked in the iPhone now, its not a bad thing but shows, for me, how poor other platforms are as a complete package...

It definitely is technically inferior to Android/Blackberry (sorry but I dont consider WinMo/Symbian a worthwhile platform) but the App Store and its popularity is hard to ignore - Android seems to be the only platform to have a chance to match what Apple have setup, but I cant see anyone surpassing it in the next few years...

Its come to the point where I may end up getting an Android phone but keeping the iPhone because of the App Store for the forseeable future...

The current situation is temporary. The iPhone has certainly exploded in terms of popularity and app development but that doesn't mean that other platform won't catch up.

The abundance of software for Windows doesn't mean that MacOS and Linux aren't viable platforms. Again, the abundance of software for the Wii doesn't mean that the Xbox 360 and PS3 aren't viable platforms.

The great advantage of the iPhone at the moment is that developers only need to target one screen resolution and only two hardware configurations. However, Apple will diversify in the future and the iPhone will lose some of its advantage.

At the same time, developing for other platforms will get easier. Just look at all of the APIs being added to Android and also Nokia's move to Qt-based development for Symbian and Maemo. The easier it is to write apps, the more will get written.

The mobile market is not a zero-sum game. 1.25 billion phones are sold a year and developers can make a living from a platform with even 1% market share.

I don't understand whats so bad about wanting to have a fashion accessory? It looks good, everyone knows what it is and it does everything I need....

And that's why it fails, i'd rather have a phone that worked. Technology should be sold for it's abilities/functions and not because it's fashionable.

Unfortunately I think theres where Apple re-wrote the book and become so dominant in such tech platforms rightly or wrongly. People like us that still consider function over form seem to be more and more in the educated minority.

That's generally why Apple users get looked down on.

Its why buying one was so hard in the first place for me, felt I was selling out but OS 3.0 was coming out and Android was still very much in its infancy and I was oh so tired of ******* WinMo I had to jump.

Im not rose-tinted at all, the iPhone is an annoying phone because of its reception/battery issues but wrapped up with App Store theres nothing close to it. Being a WinMo user for 3/4years and knowing there were apps out there, but getting frustrated looking, the App Store just does it all perfectly - I dont want to keep an iPhone because it looks pretty but the browser and App Store are something I couldnt do without now...

The same happened with the inferior iPod (pah) and iTunes

I was given mine by work, instead of thinking i've gained an iphone i feel more like i've lost a Blackberry O_o

There are things the iphone does really well but what most look for in a phone it fails to do such as battery life and reception but you can't fault it as a gadget of fun :D

I have a hero, but...

The iPhone works very well, thats part of its success. It doesnt sell just because it looks good. The UI and the responsivness of the phone is second to none.

Watching videos of the new Nexus VS iPhone browser test it failed miserably. I mean, why can't android get these things right? Apple did?

So now i've bummed apple a bit you might wonder why I havnt got one and stick with android...

1) As soon as you buy an apple product you give apple power over you. You make no decisions for yourself, they are made for you. If apple doesnt want somethig to happen, then it won't. A good example being flash can run on iPhone but Apple dont want to release it (unknown reason, possibly speed related) - however, shouldnt this be left to the customer to decide?
2) iTunes- Sucks balls, end of.
3) Can't drag and drop music from computer, big no no.
4) Not as important, but the hardware isnt as good. Why not as important? Because what they do with the hardware is still better than what better specced phones can do.
5) Stupidly expensive turn by turn sat nav
6) No multitasking (I am sure this will be addresses next phone release)

So I will always stick with android. My next phone will be the HTC Bravo if it does HD recording.

I finally got a iphone a couple of months ago after seeing the sales guys at works phones and how easy everything was.

After years with winmo it's a breath of fresh air... everyone has one because they just do the job in hand, never had a single problem with it

great email, ok browsing, great apps and games if im bored... oh and the touch screen is still one of best out there for ease of use

i don't care if a phone is 'cool' to have or not... i just want it to do the job I ask without having to tweak and hack, change roms etc etc, im sick of all that rubbish.

people buy iphone apps and thats why people code them, fair play... I don't mind paying 59p for a app I really like, certainly makes all other platforms look rubbish from a software catalog point of view... nothing comes close

iphone envy, it's a terrible thing ;)

Whilst I would like more Apps for the Hero I still like the fact that I can pull it out and it makes the girls gasp!

Your 'ten a penny' iphones don't do that any more because every **** has one :D

it's not making GIRLS gasp that iphone users are into ;):p

all the apps youve mentioned in OP can be done on different smartphones in the browser

basically by not and never adding flash support apple can continuously rip off the users by charging them so many pence for an app that the phone should be able to do anyway.

all the top selling apps seem to be completely pointless... until you remember that it doesnt have flash so you actually HAVE to use them. same with the games.

for me the only thing the iphone has going for it is the ease of use.

android is the future. google have control of too many big products for it not to succeed.

Thats the fun part ie hacking and putting new firmwares on the phone to see if it improves it or not...i absolutely love putting new beta leaks on both my BB's the 9700 and Storm2...and sometimes they are brilliant and sometimes they arent...if they arent then i just downgrade simples.

Its not iphone envy especially on my part...its more of laughing at the people who are getting shafted by Apple left, right and centre...i love how i can customise my Bb ie wallpaper or themes without having to illegally hack my phone;)...good luck trying to get Apple to fix it if goes fubar. Plus other devices such as Android, Winmo, Symbian and BB all allow you to customise your phones to your hearts content...Apple on the other hand dont want you to do that which is a crying shame in all honesty.

Perhaps if Apple ever allows the iphone to become open source...yeh right theres more chance that all hell would freeze over lol:p...then id seriously consider it ie a better battery life and multi tasking would be a start...but i dont hold out much hope of that ever happening...thats why im secretly hoping that Android, BB and even WINMO give Apple a great big kick up its backside to make some serious changes.

Everyone with Iphones always seem to blather on about apps apps and more apps.

The next person with an iphone that comes up to me and shoves his screen in my face and says ooh look i can see where the tube stations are, oh and the stars, but you live in the midlands!!!! oh oh and i can drink a pint of virtual lager and throw paper and use satnav look look it even talks, I swear down i will kick them square in the nuts.

This is somewhat true but is starting to lose the edge that it had in that devices such as the N900 are becoming less dependant on apps and more browser-based. I can use full internet banking now, so don't need that, msn is integrated so don't need an app for that, nor do I need a facebook app as I have full facebook available. There are widgets that are useful but it is becoming like windows - you no longer need to have a program to copy cd's or play music if you don't want to - ok there are better versions available but the point stands. I actually think the iphone is a little annoying, requiring an app for everything. Just how many do people use anyway and how many £m are wasted on rubbish...?

I brought myself an Iphone a few months back after selling my HTC touch. Had enough of Windows Mobile so it was time to try something new and despite all the functions which the Iphone should have or do by default like other phones, it still comes on top.
I was given a Blackberry by work and I can’t see why people compare the both. Blackberry was designed for push emails, internet browsing, texting and phone calls nothing else. Unlike the Iphone which was designed for the same functions plus more, making it a multimedia device.

I think the point is though is any phone no matter how god like the hardware lives on it's apps... same as a computer, it's the software that makes it.

Apples closed platform and ease of use of the app store makes it perfect for small time coders to develop for.

I used to enjoy hacking phones, putting win6.5 builds on omnia etc, but i'm too busy these days for that malarky, just want a functional tool

edit: I can't wait for Android to mature, it's going to be amazing, and apple better wake up and come out with a stonking update
