IPhone contracts - Set in stone?

That's one heck of a crap deal you get, 30 quid a month for only 75 or 125 mins and only a few texts?
Tbh, you will get much better value for money going with other phones than the iPhone.
Once you get a new phone, you may want to make more calls and text more then you will regret shelling out so much and getting too little!
My rule is if I pay 30 quid a month, the phone has to be FREE and I don't give a damn if that phone can dance and wash the dishes.
The iPhone is a good phone but not WORTH it, go for Xperia X1 (fantastic phone) or Touch HD, mobiles.co.uk or e2save do good deals on them.

Typed on Xperia X1:)

Well, it's particularly crap because it's 30 quid per month rather than 35.

For an extra 5 quid, you get 600 mins, 500 texts and unlimited web/wifi.

For an extra 10 quid on top of that, you get 1200 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited web/wifi.

I'm so puzzled by people trying to sway the OP from buying the iPhone, when he has made it so crystal clear that he is not interested in other phones...

I agree with you, but you are always going to get that in any IPhone thread, same as you get similar banter in an XBox/PS3 thread. Its a public forum, people have voiced their opinions..... BUT I am still getting an IPhone because that is the phone I want.

It looks like I am going to go with the contract option - just need to see decide whether its £30 or £35 per month.

What is insurance usually like on the IPhone?

I'm purely recommending other handsets for the fact that he'll be able to get a contract more suited to his needs than those offered with the iPhone.

Limiting yourself to one handset and therefore having to make a sacrifice over the contract seems a bit foolish to me!

Silly tbh, to shell out £30 a month, for something which you know you will use little of, or you could get for a fraction of the cost (£10) a month (PAYG).

IMO, get a PAYG, top up £10 a month, you'll get to chose 1 of 5 tarrifs every month, also you'll get o2 treats, o2 suprises & o2 rewards, (which sees 10% of your topups returned to you every 3 months). This IMO is a much better deal and cost saving than some of the iPhone contracts.

You'll be on a instant saver. Rather than going down the route for a contract and end up shelling out £800 ish overall.

Go for option 2 mate, the £30 a month contract is pointless, if your going contract get the £35 a month and get some useful mins/txts, although not many (500 each) its a hell of a lot better, surely your brain can figure that ?, if not buy the PAYG one on a credit card and pay it off at the same rate as the rubbish £30 a month one, seriously the £30 a month contract is pointless.

An iPhone without the Internet isn't a lot of use in my opinion.

I agree and will be using the Internet !

Trust me, this is my preferred option, I'm fully aware of how much money can be saved with this method, the only problem is the initial outlay.

This looks like the way I have to go, purely down to the fact that, for me, its the most financially viable method.

Maybe so, but at the end of the day its the IPhone I want, I've looked at other phones and this my preferred !

If i was you, go for the £35 a month with extra mins and texts.

You may even find that you ring people and text more :), i know i did when i got my c905.

Shame the OP doesn't text rather than talk.

I text a fair amount and don't talk and when I top up £10 each month for my iPhone Data Bolt-On I get 500 texts for free. Thus all my iPhone costs to run a month is a tenner. Result.

For this reason I will be upgrading to the 3G (or whatever) version later this year on pay as you go.

O2 will not vary the tariffs (on new iPhones - I have no idea about reconditioned) as they are subject to the agreement signed with Apple.

O2 were not trying to 'rip anyone off', the reality is that Apple call the shots and if you want to stock their product you have to play by their rules. Why do you think vodafone pulled out of the race to stock the original iPhone? They had the money but were not prepared to dance to Jobs' tune.

Believe me the only ones making much money out of iPhone are Apple. Distributors make more out of PAYG. It's the accessories and insurance that make Apple products worthwhile as that's where the margin is made.

Slightly OT, I've just realised Simplicity 20 comes with 600 minutes / 1200 texts now. When I started mine, it came with 600 / 1000, which I still get. Are they likely to give me more if I ask them? Anyone else been updated?

Why are you so set on an iPhone?

The iPhone is a great device, but there are far better handests on the market than the iPhone, particularly when you are restricted to you choice of contract.

The 5800 is a brilliant handset and you'll be able to get that (or a plethora of similar/better spec'd phones than the iPhone) on a contract that suits you.

I appreciate eveyone has differents wants/needs/tastes but I don't see what an iPhone can offer you that other handsets cant especially when the contracts they offer on the iPhone do not suit your needs.

And to answer your original question, no, o2 probably won't be able to offer you different contract terms to those that they advertise.

When I was evaluating my phone choices a year ago and in december nothing came close for what I use it for.

The biggest thing for me was the slick syncing of my music/contacts/emails/calender.

Nothing else out there without faffing would do that.

And anyway, the lack of MMS is no issue what so ever as not in 12 months of owning an iPhone have I been sent one, copy and paste is a pain sometimes but im sure apple will get to it, no video or a rubbish camera... I have a D-SLR, so not fussed.

He is set on an iPhone and thus he will probably get one!

To the OP: Get a 2G from the bay unlocked?

This is what I did.

You can use an O2 Simplicity SIM with any iPhone (unlocked or not) so if you can get a handset from that famous auction house or wherever that might be a cheaper option in the long run.

Other than that, yes - the O2 iPhone contracts are set in stone.

EDIT: Also there is talk of a new iPhone coming out sometime June/July time. Nothing concrete as yet but it strikes me that now might not be the best time to get a 18 month contract.
