iPhone - Edge, GPRS and Wifi

Morning,

Friday I got my iPhone. Its now jailbreaked and running a contract O2 sim.

Slightly worried about the data connection, I was originally going to add the data bolt on for £7.50 But atm the I just want to see if I can live without it.

I have turned off the 'EDGE' with the 'Services' application.

When at home I have a Wifi connection, although sometimes where the Wifi icon is placed it sometime changes to a solid white or blue square (depending on the application I’m in). But say when I open Safari the icon changes instantly to the Wifi icon.

I’m now sat at work. I have a white box with an E showing. Although when I open Safari it says..'could not activate EDGE, you are not subscribed to EDGE'

I just want to know I'm not getting changed for data and just wounded if anyone can explain what the icons mean.

I hear people use the net on a none iPhone tariff, what connection do these people actually use is it EDGE or GPRS?

I hope someone can help.

Thanks

If you've turned off EDGE then you'll be using GPRS.

I can only assume that because you've used services to turn off EDGE then it's causing issues with the icon (after all it is a hack of sorts ;)).

Turn off data roaming in the network panel of the settings, and turn off automatic retrievel of Mail if you're paranoid.

Data roaming is turned off already.

Also when i open Email to try download i get the above error about no EDGE.

So looks like it isnt connected to anything, unsure to get the bolt on or not too.

Thanks for your reply.

I believe it gives you a data connection without the charges on your bill...

Whether you're a regular email user, a sports fanatic, music enthusiast, gaming guru or just want the latest news and entertainment, we'll help you search O2 Active and surf the internet on the move with our Browsing Bolt Ons. Choose the data bolt on to suit your needs, there are 2 to choose from:

O2 Web Bolt On gives you unlimited* browsing through your phone for £7.50 per month

You can obtain the edge settings online for the iPhone and use them.

Has anyone done this?

I phoned O2 and told them to turn GRPS/EDGE off for my account as i was also worried about bills!

I think the terms and conditions are quite strict on the bolt on.

Yep be carefull with your data usage, im on the official £35 contract on a jailbreaked 1.1.2 and after 10 days into my next months bill ive allready used

This Much !!!

Thank frack its free :D

Does anyone on the "official" contract know what constitutes "unfair usage"? I looked on the site but couldnt find a MB figure.

As far as i know they used to start charging after 200MB per month, until they realised that the iphone eats data like nothing on earth in the hands of an internet junkie. a lot of complaints went in about the "fair" usage and they seemed to have changed their stance.

Now "unlimited" means "unlimited" but please dont quote me on it.

None of this is confirmed though but over the last 2 months im averaging @ least 120mb and im looking @ a new record this month allready and ive yet to be charged a single dime :D

a lot of people complain about the £35 a month, the way im hammering it its actually quite reasonable IMO.

Cheers. I'm only using 2-3mb per day so it looks like I'm way under. I'm not holding back either but I'm using it mainly for email and browsing the odd site. No videos or anything.

Although it annoyed me a little bit today when I discovered you could only use the music store on Wifi. I was gonna see how good EDGE was on a sustained download. I'll have to get my moneys worth another way. :D

Does Edge work well with web browsing and mail ?

I have my iphone on my old contract atm but its annoying me as my work don't have a wifi connection so cant check email and browse during lunch.

Its strange having the best gadget ever in my house then as soon as i leave the door it turns into just a phone and i was thinking the official contract may change that feeling.

?

Email and web browsing over edge works very well IMO. a lot slower than wifi obviously but hey I'm very happy with what I got :)

Tmobile's definition of unlimited is 40mb a day (on their £2.50 for 5 days deal) so I wouldn't worry.

TMobile's definition of unlimited on mine equates to 10GB a month. I'd like to see the iPhone have a go at that!

Im well over 250mb since launch day, really don't understand why people don't just sign up for the contract its a really good deal and jailbreaking/unlocking can cause so many problems if it goes wrong.
