iPhone internet speed

So when using something like an HTC Touch Diamond, does it use GPRS for the internet or what? I get a little confused over the protocols etc.

i.e. HTC Touch Diamond using GPRS (slower?) and iPhone using 3G (faster?)

Going by the stats of the phones on Gsmarena (reliable website), both phones have the same 3G support, 7.2Mbps.

If you're getting a slow speed, it's likely to be either the phone set not to use 3G, or just that you're only receiving a 2g signal where you are (or a very poor 3G one).

Just found the data connection toggle switch on my phone. Web runs faster now, so looks like I was previously using GPRS maybe? But I think I turned it off before because it drains the battery. Can't remember.

Do people leave 3G on all the time on the iPhone so they have fast web access, or does this drain the iPhone battery too?

I generally turn off Location, Wifi, Bluetooth when not in use.

i leave 3g on all the time as Edge/GPRS is laughable for data, but it does rinse the battery bigtime, to the point where mine lives on a charger at work.

I have a 3GS which has never had 3G switched off ever yet I find the battery to be fine. The lowest my battery has gone in a day was about 20% and that was with constant usage on a 4hr train journey and loads of calls and texts the rest of the day. I just turn off wifi and bluetooth as I don't use them most of the time and I turn the brightness down a bit and the battery is great, never had any problems at all.

I only turn Bluetooth off on my iPhone. I charge it every couple of days (or everyday if I make or recieve a lot of phone calls) I have a charger at work and one at home. It's really no big deal to do this.

On the iPhone it's a simple check box inside the settings menu, which is accessed from the dashboard.

How do people find the internet when they start moving? Stationary my iPhone internet is fine, but as soon as I start moving anywhere it just fails. It'l sit there telling me i've got full 3G signal, so i'l ask it to do something, wait.. wait.. wait.. Oh I was lying, you don't have any signal.

Is it easy to turn off Bluetooth, Wifi etc? Can you configure a toggle button for a single press to enable/disable these?

You can but it requires jailbreaking you phone. I leave Wifi on all the time as it doesn't really drain much battery when it's not connected.

The actual phone does have some affect in the speed of browsing, using the 3G connection of my iPhone tethered to my netbook is like using regular broadband, however the slower processor and limited memory on the iPhone 3G means pages can only load at a certain speed so it's not all about connection speed.
