I've had my iPhone for six weeks now.

It's cacked itself to the point of needing a full restore three times. Also, compared to my previous phones the signal atrength is quite poor.

Is this normal behaviour or should I start hassling Orange for a replacement?

I hope it isn't. I've had mine three weeks and it's not battered an eye lid and has worked perfectly since day one.

I've heard of others saying about signal strength but mine (on 02) has no difference to my previous Sony C902i.

I'd be tempted to get onto Orange about your tbh.

I've had my iPhone3G for 18 months now and never had any problems with it. The only time I have had to do a full restore was when I accidentally bricked it when trying to jailbreak it. It sounds like you have some flaky hardware if it needs restoring that often. As for signal strength it's harder to say without more information. On O2 I get a full signal at my parents house but if I stick an orange SIM in it I lose pretty much everything due to poor coverage. If you had a 3G phone on Orange before with a much better signal than it could be the phone.

Assuming its completely standard, you really shouldn't have any issues like this.

The only time I ever had problems and kept having to restore was when I was filling it up with music and each track needed compressing before putting it on.

I worked around it by uploading a smart playlist of a maximum size just under the capacity.

Sooo take it back mate.

Had mine 9 months - never had any issues with it, if your near an apple store take it to the genius bar (you don't need to have purchased it there), otherwise contact orange.

Think it's quite unusual for the phone to need a restore. I've had mine for about 15 months and that's never happened to me.

Right, well it's just syncing my music/contacts/etc. back over now.

Last chance, and then Orange get a flea in their ears.

The main problem is that some application just craps itself and takes everything else with it, so that all I can do is basic phone functions (web, phone, SMS).

To be honest, as said above, if you have an Apple Store near you, I would go get a Genius Bar appointment there before going anywhere near your provider. They will look at it and assess the problem, and if required, replace it on the spot with zero hassle.

Fantastic service in my experience.

Genius Bar appointment booked for tomorrow.

Which is lucky because today i've considered throwing it, hard. Firstly Safari pooped itself but turning it off and back on fixed it.

Then it started telling me that I had 3G and full signal when I clearly didn't as I couldn't make any calls, send any texts, or browse the web.

And finally, it's sat here now in it's dock telling me that something it's connected to is "not an official device" and that I should enable airplane mode "to reduce interference".

You what?

Sadly i've had to reschedule twice as things have come up with University and i've not had time to go in yet.

It seems to be semi-behaving itself at the moment though. Everything works, but it feels a lot more sluggish than normal.

my 1st iphone (3G) had similar problems, i just returned it and picked up a replacement. something to do with the firmware being corrupted as far as i remember- dont let them try and fob you off tho . they may give you some guff about testing it instore. insist on a replacement

They get one chance to fix it. If they can't then i'll be back and insisting that it's replaced.

Just got back, they ran a diagnostic on it and it just crashed halfway through! Wouldn't even turn on anymore, lol.

So I now have a fresh 3GS 16GB.

Pretty good to know they sort it out on the spot - just about to go 3GS as my 18months of 3G is up! Lol @ O2 though to be honest, I told them I wanted the phone for free or I'd go to Orange (what I wanted) and the bloke just said "ok" and put the phone down; the phone call 2 hours later asking if I'd reconsider was funny :D

And I'm sat here on the bus now with an iPhone where none of my apps work and Safari is lagging.

I could cry, I really could.

Interestingly, I got a text from Orange telling me I'd had a SIM update and to turn the phone off and on. Did it, and when I turned it back on, none of my apps would work.

I'll give it ONE restore tonight, but if it does it again I'm going to really lose it.

I seem to have managed to coax my applications back to life by deleting and reinstalling them from the app store, but Safari is still lagging like hell.

Have you installed many app's? Perhaps one is causing issue.

Can you run it for a few days on the basic install?
