Ok, so there's a thread or two over in mobiles complaining about multi-tasking on the iphone, and I'm curious as I'm planning to pick one up. Is it that bad? That big a deal? Just how limiting is it? How easy is it to switch back and forth between things? Any honest opinions appreciated.

I don't see the problem my self being an owner for over 2 years it never cause me a problem and I don't think I have ever owned a phone which does multi-tasking, I think people are just being complacent, that said the 3GS is very fast at switching apps now, although I only have the 3G and I still find it more than enough.

The 3gs as unknowndomain has said is indeed very quick at switching apps. It does however become annoying when you can't for example listen to something on last.fm and then leave that running in the background so that you can then browse the net or play a game whilst still listening to last.fm.

You have to listen to last.fm or spotify and nothing else.

But you could browse the web or play games if you were just listening to music using the iphone's own music player, yeah?

I'm not fussed. The interface and all the apps have been designed for this paradigm (lawl) from day one - the iPhone's success and general user satisfaction are testament to how little a hinderance it is.

i don't find it a huge issue apart from:

background music/radio from a non apple app whilst doing other things
no blackberry messenger like app (the push notification based im apps just don't compare)

If you are happy listening to music via the iPod mode then you will have no problems. I never bother with anything like Spotify or last.fm.

It can be a bit annoying having to leave your Mail app so Safari can load the link you just opened, but I have learned to get around that by waiting until I am done reading my emails before hitting any links. Assuming it is a link that can't wait until I am at a computer.

Even with unofficial software I haven't bothered with backgrounding. If you live your whole life via your iPhone it can probably be a pain. But not much.

Personally it is a complete non-issue for me 99.99% of the time.

When I'm playing Geodefense, about to possibly win some level I've been trying to win for weeks, and I get a text from someone that NEEDS answering, it makes me rage.

Aside from that I never notice it.

Seriously though when I'm playing my Geodefense and someone texts me, it's FUUUUUUU time.

For general use, it's not a problem.

However, as pointed out, it becomes a major PITA when you use any kind of 3rd party audio app (Spotify, last.fm, RSSPlayer). You can't even reply to a text without the music stopping.

The only time it's a slight issue for me is when I'm using Safari or some app and I receive a text. Curiousity gets the better of me and I just *have* to read and reply.

99% of the time it's not an issue at all.

So you have to close Safari, read the text and re-open Safari? Does it remember where you were?

I find safari usually does, but it does have this irritating habit of reloading webpages when you reopen safari, or move between tabs on it, i assume this is a memory issue.

I'd just love to be able to repsond to texts/ims from the pop up you get within safari/ipod etc.

I find it extremely annoying trying to multi-task, it's as if the iphone closes down the app when you switch to something else and when you switch back it has to reload it.
