iphone not on O2, whats the benefits?

Hi Guys

My Orange contract is up soon and I'm thinking of getting an iphone, but would it be a mistake to move from Orange to O2?

What's their network like for reception (although I know that's based on lots of other factors too?)

I'm also liking the N82 but again Orange don't do that either :( damn them!

afaik, only O2 do edge in the UK, so you'd want to be on their network if you want to use mobile internet (that isn't slower than dial up) :).

I just had a look on their website, am I right in saying you have to pay a sum of money for the handset and then a monthly charge?

you don't have to have the O2 iPhone contract though.

So you could purchase the handset from another source and then "jailbreak" it if thats the correct term?

Whats the cost of buying one out right though £400+ and will the web still be as fast on other networks?

activate is the correct term :). If you buy one, it stays unlocked, where as an activated one will only work with tesco or O2 sims unless it's unlocked (which can be done for free) but may be relocked by future firmware updates. iPhones only use EDGE for data, and only O2 has a EDGE network in the UK, everyone else uses gprs and 3G networks, on another network the iPhone can only use gprs, which is slower than both edge and 3G.

Hmmm so get my free upgrade from Orange (most expensive one) flog it and put the funds towards one of these bad boys!

Is that wrong of me to say that? :p

DOH: What an idiot I am! just read the stickies, i'm happy!

hang on can someone just explain something to me, as I had a bit of an impulse purchase yesterday of an iphone which I may or may not regret depending on what you tell me here ;)

I bought an 8gb iphone for £269 at an 02 shop and haven't activated it. Intention was to use it as my business phone, but not 100% sure yet as not sure I can now justify the cost as well as £35 a month.

I have 14 days to take it back if I so desire, which I was planning to do tomorrow!.

Am i obliged to sign the 18 month 02 contract, or can I fiddle with my new iphone and escape this contract?

I suppose what I am saying is that I haven't signed an 02 contract, I believe this comes with part of "activating" the phone?

I must stop impulse purchasing when drunk :D :D

You can return and get your money back providing you havent opened it up. Or you could just Jailbrake it, activate it then unlock it to work on any sim you have lying around, its now easier then ever, full unlock in under 3 minutes, just do this HERE

Did you flog on the auction sites?

I take it you only had the funds for the 8gb version too?

Can I get this right....

I am currently with Orange till June 08 (end of contract)
I have a Nokia N73 at the moment.

I am thinking of the Iphone, but dont like the idea of paying for a phone as never have done before.

If I do the free upgrade (as I do each upgrade time) to the best phone on Orange as soon as I can. Then sell that phone on the auction site and put the funds towards a Iphone....

Am I then CORRECT in thinking I can go to the O2 store, buy a Iphone, unlock it (somehow) and it will work 100% fine on Orange, But what about the internet thing though through the Iphone? will that not work or what on Orange? or will I be heavily charged ?

I also realise as far as Orange know, I will have whatever phone they upgraded me to. So can forget the Orange Care.
