iPhone questions

Scenario - I have an O2 pay as you go SIM already and I don't want a new, long O2 contract. What is to stop me buying an iPhone from the Apple store and using it with my existing SIM assuming I could get the phone activated ? Theoretically I wouldn't have any of the re-locking problems as it is on the 'correct' network.. what am I missing here.. sounds too simple, there has to be a catch :p

When you change the SIM the iPhone says "New SIM entered, please connect to iTunes".

I really want to like the iPhone. But everytime i look closer i just realise that its rubbish for usage in the market its ment to conquer. It literally is the perfect example of a fashion phone. Style over fuction.

Lets hope v2 has MMS, Video capture, all the SMS functions that should be standard, 3g & more memory.

No unsigned apps though, so don't expect any useful freeware that cant be charged for.
Fixed ;)

I guess you can blame Microsoft for having a closed standard which is so widely used in enterprises.
I dont particularly think thats fair - we as consumers have allowed Microsoft to do what they have and its our fault we are so reliant on their solutions - it hopefully will change with open source and linux servers in a business environment but that wont be for yonks. I cant see how I would have done anything different if I was them...

I don't "blame" them as such as Exchange is their product and they're free to be as open (or not) about it as they want. It's a shame that even Entourage is crippled for Mac though - anyone who has used OWA in anger knows that it's ridiculously ineffective compared to the Outlook/Exchange combo.

Agreed. The iPhone v2 has the potential to be a fantastic phone. My worry is that Apple is a very US-centric company and they won't listen to the feedback from European customers. I hope my fears don't come true though. :)

Apple just don't understand European consumers. We want to take pictures and send them to our mates via text, not rely on them having their email set up on their phones. We want to check things on the internet *quickly* without having to rely on a wifi hotspot being within 100 yards. Even something as simple as checking train times is painful using Edge.

I so wanted the iPhone to be good. But instead I got an ipod touch for music and a LG Viewty to actually use as a phone. It just makes a better job of it in my opinion. Oh and it was free on a £35 tariff instead of £270...

Well if Nokia get their act together and improve their OS - ie the look and ease of use, combined with their new touchscreen phones coming out - iphone v2 will be pretty irrelevant.

Quite funny, just went to the apple Regent street shop - there are barriers waiting for the 'queues' of people...but almost all the barriers are empty - only about 8 people waiting! There are camera crews interviewing just them - oh dear!

I'll buy it when they fix:

1. Call Waiting - On my SE phone, if I ring someone and they're on the 'other line', the phone will beep and say 'call is waiting at other party'. The iPhone won't.

2. SMS - Can't forward messages. Can't send to multiple recipients.

3. Picture Messaging - Just doesn't exist.

4. Put a semi-decent camera in it - Come on, 2MP is rubbish. And you can't shoot video. And there's no flash.

5. Put 3G in it. Battery life is a pretty poor excuse.

6. Not force you to use iTunes.

Maybe the Zune Phone will sort those? Doubt it'll look/feel as nice as the iPhone. Had a play with a friend's a couple of weeks ago, and it is seriously nice. Just a pity about the huge list of irritations.

Cant see it happening myself.
MS already have a large mobile market penetration without their own phone.

As MS have already confirmed it's likely, it might well happen. The fact the guess is a 4G/WiMax phone, it might not be that soon.

The iPhone/ZunePhone market is quite different to the the Windows Mobile/Blackberry market.
