iPhone questions

I was in CPW today. Have a brief play around with the iPhone.

I have to say I was impressed with the feel and the screen on it. They were top quality. Liked the map fuction and satalite images you could get of a certain place.

Txt'in, I did'nt get into that or contacts but it looked a little complex with small ish buttons next to each other and was hard to press a certain button using your finger alone.

Web browsing was intresting using the shops wifi. It loaded pretty quickly. The browser, not sure what it was but it looked decent.

Went on BBC Football to check the scores. I was pretty impressed that you could view the whole page then zoom into the part you wanted. Zooming in, I touched the screen twice. You could also move your 2 fingers outwards to zoom in. It looked cool but I felt it was'nt really practical.

I did find though once you zoomed in, the links were pretty close together and on many times I clicked the wrong one. Would definatly have to use a pen if the phone is supplied with one, I think it could be but not really sure.

Overall for the money, theres no chance that its worth the money. £269 one off payment, the a 18 month contract.

Even the £35 month contract is useless. Its only 200 mins and 200 txts. You would have to get the £45 or £55 which would bring the overall cost even more.

If you want an iPhone badly, I would get one unlocked then use a PAYG sim in there or a cheap sim-only contract.

You can use the touch for internet/emails.
Email on the touch?
If you want a brick/pda like the Orbit, with the dire dire OS called Windows sluggish and unintuitive Mobile 6 go for the orbit.:p If you want a 'phone' with pretty much every function possible on a mobile and a good camera, go for the N95 8Gb.
I dont know what version of WM you've been trying and on what device, but i have WM5 on my TyTn and its easyily as fast as my mates N95(norm).

iPhone Rev2 is the real iPhone in my books.

iPhone for Euro iPhones (o2, T-Mobile) has a solution to unlock it (not simlock) but it's not a very "final" solution so it's still best to wait for now...

Why the hell would anyone buy an N95 , aweful aweful phone,

The revised 8Gb version is an excellent phone with much of the flaws fixed. Infact, it's without major issues with the exception of battery life, once you calm down and stop spending all day playing on it, isnt bad - I've just got to the end of Day 3 on this charge.

I wonder how many people queued up for an iPhone, got it, took it out the package, tried to text all their mates at the same time to show off they got an iPhone. Failed.

Since it doesn't even have copy and paste they would have to have written the same message out for all of their mates. Doh!

i'd find it hard to believe Apple will be sorting these issues out with a firmware release.

A 2nd generation phone is the apple way... when the current iphone users still have £400 worth of contract left and can't flog their current phone on ebay because its so crippled.

This is very true. I've been buying Apple products for about 15 years, and have now got a bit sick of feeling fleeced by them. Just look at the Ipod - When the Gen 3 came out they could have esily added the functionality of 'on the go' playlists etc to the Gen 2 through a FW update, but they didnt, knowing that Apple fans would just upgrade and buy a new one. Same with OSX - its a lovely OS but by god do you pay for it. If you bought each upgrade you'd be up to about £600 now, and you have to keep upgrading because new software is quite quickly incompatible with the previous .1 version, whereas with XP which has been runnign about the same amount of time, it generally stills runs 100% of the software coming out today, plus most of what came out for '98.

As I say, I've had apple products for a loong time, and still love their design and UI, but they are shamelessly exploiting their fan base. As for the iPhone - I like the design and the price isnt an issue, but the features already discussed, ie lack of multiple texting and bluetooth will stop me from buying one, and I'll wait for the V2 whilst sticking with my flawed, but functional N95 with 4GB memory stick and my old Gen 4 iPod. This should work out about right, as I'm with O2 already and renewal is next July :)

:p Funny my XDA Orbit is smaller than the N95 by a long shot, also iv got apples iphone interface running on it now, very nice ;) WM5 that it came with was sluggish, WM6 is a lot faster, very nice, but for now yes im running iphone interface, mainly just to nark off my mates who spent £280 on a phone then another grand on the contract for it :D

Just had a play with the iPhone. Went in relatively open-minded (although I already knew what the O2 contract terms were) and my views basically mirror Bennahs.

Easily the slickest overall phone interface I've used. Safari with the double-tap zoom and pinching to zoom in/out seemed so intuitive it made me wonder why it hadn't been done before in Windows Mobile, etc. The various interfaces were very well put together and from a HCI point of view it's obvious Apple know what they're doing. iPod functionality was impressive if not unsurprising. The device itself went between applications quickly and smoothly, so no complaints there.

Tried txting and even though I have normal sized fingers I made quite a few mistakes. I was helped somewhat by the predictive text but there was no obvious way that I could see of cycling through other choices, etc. Holding the phone with one hand whilst tapping with a finger also seemed like a lot more effort than should be necessary. It took me about 3 minutes to write "This is a test message to see how easy it is to type", tried the same on my N95 8GB when I left the store and it took less than 30 seconds (and was one handed).

All things considered if the TCO was a lot lower I would definitely be interested in it, but only as a little folly. I couldn't reconcile paying £269 + £35/18 months for it - it just doesn't seem like it's worth that amount of money when you consider what else is on the market and what's missing from the phone (hardware & software).

tl;dr version: Great UI, very pretty phone, too flawed (for me) to use as an everyday phone.

I tried one of these today - I thought it was great. Beautifully looking, quite easy to use (texting etc) and the online features are cool too. I do, however, think it is overpriced (bearing in mind the contract), and, personally, I'd be happy with the phone I've got plus an Itouch.

Hi guys, reading up on the iPhone as i've get a friend offering to get me one from the states for £190 unlocked when he goes to new york on an xmas shopping trip in 2 weeks time :)

I've always been a nokia fanatic (used a 6600 to death - still do with sat nav etc) and my current is a N70 thats probably nearing 3 years old... worn buttons, 1gig card etc etc, mainly use it as a basic camera, contacts, fone (around 300/400 minutes a month) and 500 or so txt's

Voda have been bugging me since feburary (as i'm well overdue an upgrade) but i've not liked the look/feedback from the latest nokias so i've stuck with my trusty n70. I live in a rural area so 3g is fairly rare but wifi is always useful with work

So i put the question to you guys, is this first gen iPhone gonna do what i do currently on my poor old n70 (reading this thread makes me think not...) and am i going to be disapointed (and end up using my n70 again) or is it worth me trying it out and sticking by apple to see what they have to offer? (i've never been a great fan of apple/ipods - bit of a dinosaur PC user set in my ways...)
:)

"basic camera, contacts, fone (around 300/400 minutes a month) and 500 or so txt's"

Well the iPhone will do those things well enough, and will look pretty whilst it's doing it. Bear in mind the obvious caveats - it won't send txts to more than one recipient, doesn't do MMS, the camera isn't anything special, etc. If those things are likely to bother you then stick with what you've got.

The key problem is that UI/experience aside the iPhone is a comprimise functionally for anyone who is coming from a phone that's less than a couple of years old. How much of a comprimise depends on your own circumstances. 500 txts sounds like quite a lot a month and I must say my experience of txting on the iPhone wasn't favourable - it's slower than using tactile keys imo, unless you tried using a stylus.

Ok, thanks Durzel.

Pretty much confirmed my own conclusions from reading this thread... Sharing photos with bluetooth after a night out is quite a regular occurance, as is sending a few 'mass' txt's to get mates to the pub on a friday! ;)

As voda keep bugging me for this upgrade i may just opt for the n95 8gb if they'll do it for free and see if i can get a month or 2's 'trial' where i can send it back and maybe get a new n70?! I'll continue waiting for the next gen nokia's (in response to the iphone) i guess! :)

Why the hell would anyone buy an N95 , aweful aweful phone, o2 XDA Orbit is where its at, it does all and more than the N95, and it actually has a battery life AND if you so like install the free 'iphone' skin that makes it behave more or less like an iphone. Free on a £35 month contract

They wouldn't. They'd get one for free on contract.

I wouldn't say it's an 'awful, awful' phone. What it does, it does pretty well.

Are you hallucinating!?:p the XDA Orbit is considerably larger than the N95, and if you want an iphone get one;) I dont doubt the Orbit is capable, but Id put it more in the pda camp, its too big/pdaish for me to use as a day to day phone (imo of course).

Id like to retract all my previous Iphone comments and issue the below based on having owned one. Three days Ive had it and its now on ebay.

1) Its massive and heavy. Totally impracticle as a phone. I presume the IPhone nano will be released soon to scam yet more customers. No need for it to be this big. It could have been the size of the actual screen with the home button the side.

2) Its not a very good phone either. Yes it makes calls and sends txts but the on screen keypad is no good for thumbing, has to be two handed finger tips.

3) The gimmicks are nice but scrollable photos and album covers are a short lived nice to have.

4) If I want to browse the internet Id use a laptop TBH, too small and clunky with all the zooming and scrolling etc.

5) Nice touch with google maps, but not a winner.

For me the small sony 880 I have wins hands down. Its a very good phone and has a walkman. Its wafer thin and small and fits in my jeans pocket when I go to the pub. If you tried to take the Iphone to the pub you would need to take a bag.

All in all a nice try but a viewty and a touch ipod is far preferable to me if you must have touch screen technology.

As we know it says I in front of it and its "designed in california" so will sell out everywhere. All credit to the designers and marketers, they have the world stiched up and its all off the back of second rate technology in nice boxes.
