iphone!?

IMO the iPhone has revolutionised the mobile phone market, bringing style, features and a revolutionary UI to a boring stagnant market giving a kick up the backside to other companies.

Lucky you dont post on some of the larger mobile forums like howardforums, as its quite amusing watching some poor guy getting flamed to death whenever the word revolutionary is associated with the iPhone :D . I agree that the style and UI is very clean and sleek but feature/spec wise, a lot of existing phones already overshadow it.

Who would have thought a year ago that people would be queuing outside stores for a phone?

Then again who would have thought a year ago that a phone would cost $500 on a 2 year contract?

All I can say is that Apple has definately marketed this product right, the hype generated was quite unbelievable.

Is this really going to be on a 2 year contract over here then? I know that the tariffs in America you get unlimited web data which is a bit of a bonus for the iPhone, but i thought 18 months was a long time for a contact!

I was also reading here that the iPhone doesnt support MMS? Surely that would have been a big one to put in there?

It's very interesting looking back at this thread to see how wrong people were about the iPhone!.

You can say that again...

This post couldn't have gotten it more wrong :D

Love the "I've been in the industry long enough" bit especially...

I've been in the industry long enough to know this will almost certainly be a flop to the masses, and will probably go en-route to the same slow death as the N91..

Lol even I dismissed the device until I saw that incredible keynote. It made almost every manufacturer run to their drawing boards to rethink things.

I also think that what Apple do better than anyone else is make you want their devices.

There's just something about their products that for me no other manufacturer brand give off.

I just know that for me personally every time I buy their devices, once the novelty wears off I miss things from other devices.

For me when/if Apple start using oled screens in their phones and tablets and just add a bit more flexibility to their iOS then I won't look twice at an android device.

Exactly this!! The do make products that are VERY nice to use and have a certain aura about them - so smooth and shiney and well designed however scratch the surface and theres stuff that does just work better with android / isnt even present on an idevice.
Still - funny reading that thread :)

Great thread revival

As much as I hate the backbone of apple being locked down this phone was revolutionary
I very much remember having this device

I went to great effort to get it imported from the USA on launch. Spent many many hours jailbreaking it (seriously a ball ache for version 1)
I whipped it out on my lunch break and proceeded to get very little done as people instantly asked what it was and could they have a go. This was before UK launch too.

It was beautiful, new and set a benchmark.
I haven't and won't have another iPhone. But was very happy to have it. Single biggest upgrade ever going to it.

I think it was only a couple of weeks old in the USA when I got it

I don't see it selling to the masses myself, purely because of cost. It's inevitably going to be an expensive unit, so it'll only be available on higher-end contracts, unless you're willing to pay extra for it. Aside from people that are in the market for a Smartphone-type unit already (and I'm not sure how competitive it'll be in this field if it's on a closed-platform), I don't see it appealing to the lower-end of the market, even with the iPod functionality. I'd rather have a nice 'free' phone on a reasonably-priced contract, and an iPod Nano. Which is what I've got.

This is my favourite quote of them all :p
