Ipod Touch and Iphone 1.1 Officially hacked

If it works, Apple should learn that they aren't going to win against this.

Good news for the users, horrible news for the iPhone carriers.

Keeps the hackers busy but I think the constant game of tit for tat with Apple is going to get really old really fast for some users (e.g. ME). I just want something that works and stays working.

Still, whatever keeps you happy. :)

touch will stay working, 1.1 seems relatively bug free.

I wouldn't rejoice too quickly.. these hacks are dependant on an exploit in Mobile Safari handling of TIFF images so as soon as Apple patches that (as they're sure to do in 1.1.2) they'll be back to square one.

so dont update, apple wont be able to match the maps, notes, stocks, weather, chat, nes, e-book reader etc that will be ported straight from iphone apps to touch for many months, if ever to come.If your an iphone owner and have access to most of these apps and can brick your iphone much easier than the touch, then the decision isnt so easy.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

I still think Apple will fight it, just as they have with the iPods of the past though, sadly :(

But it's still not without some bad news: unfortunately, it sounds like most (if not all) of these new hacks rely solely on that single TIFF exploit in Mobile Safari, meaning that everyone's back to square one the moment Apple beams v1.1.2 to the public at large.

I fear you are right. Just seems to be that they're going to be as stubborn as hell with it and it'll be one of those forever long battles between developer and 'advanced user'.

The only time they'll probably stop is when it is available on Pay as you go (whenever that will be). Although if they do stop blocking hacks on the iPhone when it's Pay as you go, you can't help but imagine that will bring about a lawsuit or two from still-bitter customers.

To a degree I can understand why Apple are fighting it. The carriers have paid god-knows how much for the iPhone exclusives in their respective countries and for Apple to turn around and do nothing or say 'okay, hack it, no worries' will not only land them on bad terms with the said companies, but sucks away an x amount of millions for the iPhone V2 and so on.

I would buy one if it was 30GB and Pay as you Go, but you would have to be a complete fool to buy it for the price it is and further still, pay the monthly tariffs that are available with it. Apple are fools for overpricing an excellent product. How long it will take them to realise that will be anybody's guess.

Isn't this just jail break to enable installation of custom apps rather than unlocking the phone too? Good news for touch owners and people who use their iphones as ipods, but not so great if you want to use it as an unlocked phone.

Yes, but usually the SIM hacks are on the horizon once the thing has been Jailbreak'ed / broken.

It's only a Safari exploit.. I expect this to last a month in the wild, if that.

I don't really agree with this, a product is only worth what someone is willing to pay. The recent surge in Apple sales indicates that they are getting the balance about right. In terms of features/buck the iphone is overpriced, but the number of people willing to pay that premium means it's not.

As to whether the iphone will bomb in the UK becuase of the unit price and tariff cost, only time will tell.

Sorry but £899 minimum for a phone on an 02 contract here, is nothing short of ridiculous. Especially for what it is lacking.

It'll be an even bigger hit on Pay as you go - don't think it takes an expert to work that out and I'm sure Apple are looking forward to when it does. However, the only shame will be that anyone who is anyone will have one. (good thing from Apple's point of view)

To you maybe, but until we see what happens on D-Day, we can't say if it's overpriced. I agree that Apple would sell more units if they unlocked the phone, but that may not equate to higher profits. Apple may sell fewer units at a higher margin.

To try an speculate as to how well it will sell in the UK is insane. We just don't know. The US uptake is next to useless as the price is different and the market/expectations are a world apart from the UK. All we can say is that Apple and O2 think they are on to a winner.

Ridiculous, yes, but if people are willing to pay for it, which they clearly are, then Apple are on to a winner, surely?

I agree, it is overpriced and lacking in terms of technology, but the fact is, Apple know it will sell because it's apple, and it's sexy.

and it's sexy.

This is actually something I find quite hard to understand many peoples response to (Not you in particular). The fact that it looks good is a major plus point, but many people put it way down the list of "features" when criticising Apple products. As humans "form" is very important to us, just think how many use "good looks as a filter" when looking for a partner

Of course it will sell.

People will like what they see and people will buy it for many different reasons. Whether that's for actually getting use out of it or being the flash suit with the flash phone with the Apple logo on the back, is just part and parcel of the consumer world.

However, people unlocking their iPhones hasn't come about because the device is cheap or because switching to AT&T is worth it. They are causing a massive problem to Apple because Apple are causing a massive problem to their wallets or purses.

I'm no expert (honest!) and Apple may have their market research completely spot on with this one (time will tell) but anyone paying £900 for an iPhone either has too much money or has a severe case of wanting the in-thing.

How is it overpriced when there is nothing on the market anywhere nears its level?Sure it lacks 3g, but these are minor parts compared to its size, screen, multi touch, advanced OS for its size, amazingly smooth UI, 8gb storage built in for a phone, google maps, youtube, etc etc, you cant simply point out the negatives and criticise the price without pointing out the overwhelming amount it has over is nearest rivals.
