i recently brought a ipod touch 4th gen. i am new to these things, but i want to transfer some music and video to it, but does it has to go though itune everytime?

is there a way to transfer stuff without itune? and what is the best media player in the app store, that has the best codec and file format support?

All through iTunes, yes.

You need to sync it with ONE machine and manage your content that way. Music/Video's etc need to be added to iTunes, videos need to be converted .mp4 or .m4v .

You can use programs like Handbrake (available for both Windows/Mac) to convert movies etc.

:)

Yea like previously said it all needs to be done through iTunes unfortunately.
iTunes converts the .mp3 file formats to .acc format for the iPod to recognize.

I bought a 4th Gen iPod Touch the other day too, and I love it, 8GB though, not enough room!

Your iPod is also synced to your account only, so plugging it into someone elses computer with iTunes will most likely erase all your data for theirs so watch out!

I still you'd better transfer the files to iPod via iTunes, as this is the fast and right way to do for free without any paying, you can get the simple guide from online.
here is one: iFunia iPod culmn -> Sync videos to iPod shows you step-by-step.
