ok i'm into gadgets and have had my touch for a couple of years now.

of course since im out and about with the nipper and have some games installed my son has become adept with the touch as well.

after plaguing us for a nintendo 3DS we have decided to opt for the touch instead due to the price difference in games but not only that there are some really cool learning apps as well.

one of them is teach me which he plays non stop in the car.

I've looking at parental controls on them and I'm quiet pleased to see how apple have already give me quiet a lot of control on how he can use the pod.

I'm 99% sure he'll get one from santa but what's the consensus from the ocuk hoi polloi?

To extravagant? spoiling his childhood? or good idea and educational tool.

There are probably better educational tools. However, I have to appreciate that times are changing and it's not surprising this type of technology will soon become common place for children this age and younger.

There's some good stuff on the iPad for ages down to 3 not sure about the pod but there was a academic study done (going from memory) in California where they found it very good and intuitive for down to age 3 with the appropriate software so you should be fine.

And it aint spoiling the kid. You don't spoil kids by giving them things. You spoil kids when you give them things to avoid conflict - there's a subtle difference. Might not appreciate the value of money and cost but that's another issue.

he won't have net access that's for sure... nor the ability to have in app purchases....

lol learned that the hard way after he bought 700 coins for coin dozer ....

Price difference in games? What! The ipod touch is not even a games console, cheap skate!

I think the DS makes a much better device for kids considering it's durability, ipods were not really designed with this kind of use in mind.

Bit too young in my eyes, but maybe I'm old fashioned. I think learning aids that interact with 'the real World' are much better than interactive ones.

My little brother age 5 hes got an iphone4 and he only plays games on that and laptop.. id say its a good thing but i wish there were more educational/fun apps for him.

My niece can work an iphone/ipod touch, she likes playing angry birds and some peppa pig game and a few others, its great, she is only 6 but also likes to read and draw and play with other toys, its the future now for kids to use such devised but make sure they dont think its the be all and end all of learning.

Except they are and are now being marketed as such.

Just look at the latest iPod/iPhone launch where they focus on the graphics power and show demos of graphically intensive games.

They know they're competing with the DS as it is a better all round system. Yes the DS and Vita offer a slightly different catalogue of games but the iPod Touch is a brilliant device for portable gaming and when games are a few pounds at most it is easy to keep things fresh.

Seems a pity that he'll have his face glued to a tiny screen instead of looking out at the world around him. Learning apps won't make up for not seeing any of the world bar a 3 inch screen.
