ipod touch for a 6 year old

I wonder how many of the OMGZ too young look out the window and enjoy running about gang actually have kids. I'd say not many.

We've been considering an ipod touch for the 6yr old for his 7th bday in Jan. My only worry is that he'll lose the thing due to the size. Him and his nearly 4yr old brother have normal DS's and are good in the car and that but he loves music and would be good to be able to get him one.

They play outside all the time, this is not even part of the discussion. I don't see why people think it would be? Do people ALL have a TV in your house? Yea, and I bet they're not glued to this all the time are they? No, because it's not allowed. Get some perspective.

You hippy. Who wants a child with fine motor skills and creativity.

I don't think anyone is saying 'don't buy things like lego' at all, but you knew that anyway didn't you. It's hard to have an adult conversation here sometimes with people trying to win internet points by trying to put words into other people's mouths. Well done, have a cookie.

Not allowed in your house sure. Can you say that for every house in your street?

I was given a sega megadrive at 6 years old. I didn't turn out fine, I've an avid meth addiction, and I'm pretty sure my blood is about 30% alcohol, with that said, my pee is a neon green which is kinda cool.

I'd say get a DS, iPods can be fragile and the DS is made to be kind of childproof and they are so easy to grasp, my five year old brother has one and there are loads of educational games on the DS. :)

As someone said above, there are probably better educational devices out there. I wouldn't recommend a 3DS due to the well known 3D related headache problems.

There are some great educational games for both the DS and the iPod, however I think a DS may be a little more suited to the age range

I used to have an old school record player at his age that I'd use for a revolving platter of doom for my Star Wars figures (78 RPM would finish 'em all off) and also to play my Star Wars album on.

I also had a 48k Spectrum when not much older that involved fairly complex skills to use (well at least compared to consoles or ipads, etc) in the sense that you had to know how to operate numerous peripherals and know basic command prompts to load games.

So I don't think a boy of 6 is too young, far from it, kids are a lot smarter than they get credit for and if he's interested in technology at such an early age it is likely just an indication that he's a bright little fella.

Would you allow your kids to? My point is I bet none of these people commenting about how bad it is have kids.

My opinion will be wrong since I don't have children. What about those in this thread that DO and still said no? I know for a fact that some of them do.

It's not the no response. It's the response that they need to get outside, see the world bla bla. As was posted, you can't turn kids off. The ones with kids that say no, that's fair enough, but if ones with kids say no they need to be in the real world, I'd like to point out my response above, that just because they have it doesn't mean that they would be glued to it. Unless they are unable to enforce this? If they abuse it, it gets removed.

If you've ever done a 4hr car journey with small 2 kids in the back then you'd get it.

Got two kids, thanks. One of them is 5 1/2, and she will not be getting an iPod touch for her 6th birthday... or her 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th...

Want me to go on?

I've done that sort of journey. What do I win? We play music, read stories... The closest we've come to an iPod touch was ripping some kids DVDs onto my wife's netbook and playing that in the back seat.

Besides, my parents used to routinely drive me and my siblings across Sweden and for some of those journeys some of us would have been 6 years old. Driving across Sweden takes quite a while. We read books and listened to music, and my parents took care to plan in interesting stops. I've noticed I have a considerably higher tolerance for boredom than most people...

I'm with Mr. Helmet on this. No way would my six year old get an iPod Touch.

Lego, sure. Anything that encourages thought processes and creativity, yes. Whilst children need to be introduced to technology as it is part of their everyday lives as adults I personally think six is too young.

Technology is, in my opinion, making for some lazy parenting nowadays.
