ipod touch for a 6 year old

Sorry I was away so didn't get back to the thread. Well we only darned well bought one as it was 160€ (£128) at Dublin Airport for a 8gig (wife is jealous as his is 4th Generation with camera) got him the white one.

However just wanted to add that his time on it will be limited as his current time on his old DS is limited.

We have a 40 minute drive to school every morning and some mornings (especially in winter) it's dead boring we are barely awake and its something for him to do. He usually stops playing it before I ask him anyway.

He never plays with it at home since he has other toys to play with and we play constantly with him using board games like Frustration, Ludo, Monopoly and my fav Mexican Train which I recommend for anyone with young kids. Can't wait until he's ready for Cludeo :D

We have extensive lego and hot wheels collections as well.

Over all I didn't want him having a DS but his gran bought it for him but it really hasn't been a problem I would ask him to turn it off if he didn't I took it from him for the day no questions.

If it drops and breaks then that's it no replacements (this has been a rule for all his toys...)

My 4 year old daughter always uses the Ipad/Ipod Touch - no problems at all. Plus she has net access an gets about Youtube with no problems.

Slightly off topic, but I am quite glad that I didin't have any technology when going around in the car, as I feel a bit funny when looking at my phone when being driven around - mild travel sickness I suppose.

Used to feel awful when younger if I was in the back of a car :(

Glad you got it sorted though, and glad to hear you have a no-replacement policy :)

I've done that sort of journey. What do I win? We play music, read stories... The closest we've come to an iPod touch was ripping some kids DVDs onto my wife's netbook and playing that in the back seat.

Besides, my parents used to routinely drive me and my siblings across Sweden and for some of those journeys some of us would have been 6 years old. Driving across Sweden takes quite a while. We read books and listened to music, and my parents took care to plan in interesting stops. I've noticed I have a considerably higher tolerance for boredom than most people...

An iPod touch will also play music, and allow kids to read, usually more interactive books. So you've actually done 3 things that an iPod touch would do.

no thats fine kids these days are used to these gadgets there parents carry about so there is no harm in it, i was thinking of getting my 6 year old one bit might give him my simless iPhone 3gs when i upgrade then its not gonna cost me anything.

He also has his own PS3, 360 & wii, DS and PSP and a 40" LCD in his own room.

In my whole life I've only bought one console (a Wii) and it has spent 99% of it's life in the box. My friends have previously passed on their old N64's and PS2's, but again they suffered the same fate.

Maybe one day I'll treat myself to a 40" TV though.
