ipod touch from US?

Just read a review saying that you need itunes (on a mac) to initialise it, i guess agree the terms etc. Is this true? Comes down to me needing to bring my laptop with me on holiday or not.

Just bought one in new york, got the 16gb. It wouldnt work until I connected it up to my PC at home. Take your laptop to activate it. Once activated your good to go. You will need your laptop to charge it too, as no AC charger comes with it.

The itunes store works fine too. It flicked over to the UK store as soon as I connected my itunes to it. The itune store was the only bit I was worried about.

yeah kinda crumbled to taking my laptop anyway, just still need to get the wife to crumble t allow me to buy one now.
Did you get yours in an apple store or from another retail?

What's the concern with customs then? When I bought an iPod over there I had it in my pocket and put the box in the suitcase. Problem solved.

Exactly. I've bought back 4 ipods before now in a suitcase still in the wrappers. I always buy something out there, usually electrical goods etc and have never ever been questioned or even looked at funny. A complete non-issue.

Only time i've paid import duty is when buying over the internet and the non-eu company ships something to me. thats hit or miss.

My mrs is a school teacher, but the guy in the Apple store didn't ask for any proof :)

Of course it will be working! Get a charger for it, use it in an Apple store for free net access, load up some pages and save some bookmarks, add some music from iTunes. Use it while away and enjoy :D

Ohhh do you get an educational discount for being a school teacher !!! How much?

*eyes up the wifey* :p

Will look into jailbreaking it when i get home. I gather it just takes a google to do it?

jailbreakme.com, scroll to the bottom, click the obvious link, wait for Safari to crash and wait a bit for it to lock, slide to unlock and you're done, with installer.app on there, as well as the Safari exploit fixed.

Once that is done, install community sources from the list and BSD subsystem and OpenSSH if you want to SSH into it (For installing iPhone apps or whatever)

To install iPhone apps you will need to Google around a bit for the download.

Some Apps I recommend; Apollo for IM, Touch calendar fix and Summerboard.

Enjoy. :p

K guys need some info

Bro is going to New York, so im thinking about this too.

uestion is how much in doller would you pay in the Apple store, and is there any TAX involed when buying.
Im working out a 16gb, in £ workout out to be about £190, im I about right?

Sorry jsut to add, ive heard that if you make it out to be a GIFT, and they market it as so you should be fine, any truth in this too?

Sales TAX for New York is 14-20% iirc :)

It will be cheaper than the UK, whatever you pay.

Correct.

Not so much, as it will exceed the value of a 'gift' making it still liable to import tax etc.

It would be better to have him bring it back with him.

Its not worth importing one from the apple store is it? I will get charged tax plus the shipping.

If you try to enter a UK credit/debit card at the checkout you'll be forwarded to the UK store.

The only way to get one from the USA is to buy it from a store, or you can get someone to ship it to you if you know someone who lives there (and will take delivery).

I've so got my eye on one these! Problem is im gonna have to find someone willing to buy my ipod video! (Crimbo pressy to the missus? Tight? BAH! :p) Off to HK again in december, anyone know what they retail for over there? Still thinking £260 is a bit steep for the 16gb version.
