are sky now using IPV6 as i've just run ipconfig and come up with an IP address like this:
xxxx::xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxxxx

if not then what type of IP is it as it's not one that i recognise? :confused:

Yeah, I must admit I don't recognise xxxx::xxxx::xxxx::xxxx:xxxx - I normally am ok with yyy:yyy:yyy:yyy !!!

But yes that does look like an IP6 address - some ISP's have started to use these now I think

Sorry!
Rob :D

Has it suddenly appeared (wasn't there before)? You would have had to install the IPv6 Protocol, and i don't think you would have got it from Sky anyway unless you are direct connected (no router).

A lot of other newer boxes run dual stack, so you'll have an IPV6 and an IPV4 address at the same time <like an IPconfig in Vista> To help with interoperability in future.. Although I don't know anything about Sky's network - they may well be running full IP6

I'm assuming you've got a router, your PC had IPv6 installed for ages (think vista installs it by default) and so that's all you are seeing. It's not from Sky, just the autoassigned IP6 address.

My guess is that you have the IPv6 stack running anyway, and your OS has assigned you a automatic IP address because it hasn't received one by DHCPv6 or had one manually set.
(The same kindof thing as the 169 IPv4 addresses windows assigns).
If sky had rolled out IPv6 tech sites would have mentioned it tbh.

You will still be running IPv4 to the web, do a traceroute www.google.com, bet it will work and the hops will be IPv4.

EDIT: Beaten :P

If it starts with fe80::, then it is a link-local address, based on the MAC address for the interface or some other unique identifier if it isn't ethernet.

If it starts with a 2 or 3, it's likely to be a real unicast address (unlikely, for Sky :p)

It isn't "strange" - every Vista install has IPv6 enabled by default. You've just never noticed it before.

What he said. Your router probably doesn't even do IPv6.
